Father-in-law dragged deeper into Powell saga

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — In a folder on his work computer labeled "Personal Pics," Steve Powell maintained a peculiar collection of photos: 55 depicting his daughter-in-law Susan but few if any showing his son.

Thousands of images and emails on his Washington state government-issued laptop provide a small glimpse into his increasingly scrutinized world. Authorities said this week that he is a person of interest in her 2009 disappearance in Utah.

The files, obtained by The Associated Press as part of a public records request, portray Steve Powell as a meticulous worker who gathered photos by the thousands and had his life upended by the constant inquiries that ensued after Susan vanished.

He is now in jail on voyeurism and child pornography charges — and on suicide watch.

Powell's son and Susan's husband, Josh, killed himself and the couple's two young sons in a gas-fueled inferno Sunday that a prosecutor considers an admission that he killed his wife.

Investigators have been trying to piece together Josh Powell's last days. Court documents filed Friday say that a search of a storage unit he rented turned up a stained comforter that tested positive for blood in initial exams. Investigators planned further tests.

Until this week, authorities have only publicly discussed Steve Powell in relation to the charges he now faces. But a warrant and emails indicate that he has been dragged deeply into the Utah investigation surrounding his son, and police say they want to interview him to see if he knows anything about his daughter-in-law's disappearance.

"He may or may not have information that may be beneficial to us," said Sgt. Mike Powell in West Valley City, Utah, where Josh and Susan Powell lived at the time of her disappearance. Sgt. Powell is not related to the family.

The September warrant sought details specifically from Steve Powell's laptop, which he used in his job helping coordinate purchase and placement of school furniture. It also requested a search of state-owned vehicles that Powell may have driven.

Steve Powell said last year that he had a flirtatious and somewhat sexual relationship with Susan Powell. Her parents said she thought he was a creep and moved to Utah in part to get away from him.

In a search of Steve Powell's Washington state home last year, authorities found explicit images on his computers and images of people being photographed without their knowledge. Among them were pictures of Susan Powell.

Those findings led to the voyeurism and child porn charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty. The state took custody of Josh Powell's boys and turned them over to Susan's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox.

Powell's work computer has a batch of photos of Susan Powell, though none appear to be sexual. They depict her and the kids opening Christmas presents and out during Halloween. A few show Susan Powell and the kids more formally dressed. It's not clear who the photographer is.

An attorney for Steve Powell did not return a call seeking comment.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist, who is overseeing the voyeurism prosecution, said it's his understanding from the images collected that Susan Powell is the subject of much of Steve Powell's photographic attention.

He said the many images of Susan Powell might be of some interest to Utah authorities, but he has seen no evidence connecting Steve Powell to what he calls Susan Powell's murder.

Emails show that Powell was actively working in the days around when Susan Powell disappeared on Dec. 6, 2009. He responded to emails the next morning, even drawing praise from a manager for pointing out an oversight related to holiday cards.

A school district contact that he was scheduled to meet with that week said she never had any problems with Steve Powell and never realized he was Josh Powell's father until seeing him later on television.

"He was always professional and did what he was supposed to do," Susan Garthwaite said.

A couple weeks later, on Dec. 21, he wrote to a colleague about how Josh and the boys had moved back to live with him and that the children were traumatized by the bright lights of the media and "the searches."

"Even with Josh and the boys here, I am so numb much of each day that I have to put myself on auto-pilot to get things done," he wrote. "I know there are people with worse problems, but when it's yourself experiencing the suffering, you can't just tune it out."

He then added, "I still need to send a card to Susan's folks."

Her parents said no such card ever arrived.

Powell later described to a colleague in 2011 how he and Josh were baffled by the ongoing investigation in Utah.

The case appeared to take an increasing toll on him. He requested time off around the time of the search warrants and then later complained of harassing phone calls from Utah that accused him of "harboring a criminal, accusing my son of murder."

In the search warrant used to examine Powell's belongings, authorities said, they were investigating a murder in West Valley City, Utah, though nobody has ever been charged with a crime.

Utah investigators say the case remains open and they are still publicly calling it a "missing persons" matter.

I listened to Susan's parents ... there is no doubt in my mind they would attempt to implant memories in the minds of the boys ... they want the father to be guilty ... was this a "strange family", yes ... but on all sides ...

it took a long time for the boys to open up, that must have scared the so called "dad" to do what he did to the boys, everything pointed at him, and i'm sure his dad was involved.

None of these "family" members are normal. They all have culpability. None more than the #$%$ who killed these boys but all of them are not quite right. Crazy old perv grandfather who has done God knows what. Maternal grandparents who made the boys go see the man they believe killed their daughter. The insane father who took their lives. All of these people are pathetic and weird.

I honestly can't believe there are people here defending Josh Powell. This would be the reason I prefer animals to a lot of people. Sickening.

Sounds like the father-in-law had a fantasy relationship with his son's wife. His infatuation/obsession with her may have contributed to problems within his son's marriage that were a part of whatever happened. It's hard to imagine that he isn't in some way, however indirectly, responsible for what happened within the family. The fact remains, however, that no normal father would kill his 2 small boys because he felt unjustly persecuted. More likely, he was a narcissist who was indeed responsible for his wife's death, then chose to kill his kids rather than let anyone else have them when he decided to kill himself. Just like he probably killed his wife rather than deal with whatever issues they may have been having. Only his feeling counted. There's a special place in hell for guys like him.

The sad fact is that this type of deviant behavior and child abuse moves from generation to generation and the only thing that breaks the chain is death or jail.

I don't understand why this comforter is just turning up now. WHy didn't the authorities issue a search warrant for the storage unit? DId they not know that it existed? Was it the fathers?
      CREEPY!

They want this case over and done with. There needs to be a much closer look at Grandpa. Josh had a history of suicide attempts and animal cruelty. Sometimes the hallmark of abuse. Steve ex in divorce papers accused the husband of mental instability, polygamy, pornography and engaging in witchcraft. Both parents sound like nuts, but Steve sounded like the one that you needed to watch out for.
Considering the type of cartoon porn on Josh's computer it smacks of a kid that was molested until adult hood. I have to think that daddy was such a powerful force in his life that it makes more sense that daddy could not control himself, raped and murdered Susan and Josh, the ever obedient son, hid her body for him. Think about it. What normal man would not slap the spit out of even a dad that they were on good terms with if he was hitting on his wife? What man would not go ballistic and start talking to the cops to point the finger at his dad if he found out he was taking secret photos of his wife after his wife disappeared? Only a man that felt that he had no right, or was not "man enough" to push back at a man abusing his wife would.

This entire thing is just so sad. Susan's children were just beginning to get use to living with their grandparents. While watching Dateline last night Susan's grandmother said, she had to talk both boys into going to visit their father the day he killed them and himself. They didn't want to go, she said." I'm not sure why his wife stayed with him as long as she did. My guess is; She found out he was just like his father, threatened to leave him, so he got rid of her before she could take the children and leave. He kept saying,"I didn't hurt my wife." No, he didn't hurt her he killed her. That's how psychopaths rationalize their behavior.

I hope a new law to protect kids comes from this-- LIke some = if you are being investigated for murder - no visits= or if you are so freaky that even your own sister was afraid to drive over & check on you-= no visits or if someone in the household got busted for pedophlic pix on computer- =no visits we should have a 0 tolerance rule when it comes to kids.

I don't give a #$%$ about this guy's suicide, but why take the innocent kids with?

The thing that bothers me most about this case is that if the authorities had knowledge that the boys were saying mommy was in the trunk, and of these other items, why the hell were they allowing the father even supervised visitation? I have seen cases prosecuted and people convicted of murder on less evidence than is being released.

Sounds like maybe there's a reason why the son was the way he was. He was obviously psychologically disturbed. I'm guessing the father must have played a part in making that happen. Who goes around insinuating they had sexual relations with their daughter-in-law when she is missing???.... creepy......
    • Jan  •  3 mths ago
What is really sad here is that there are two Grandparents left wondering what if, and other Family members probably saying the same thing. It is unbelievable that a Father could take an ax to his children, when he professed in a courtroom that he was a loving parent. No one saw this coming and I wonder........how many possible signals were missed.
    • Carol  •  3 mths ago
I don't care what happens to you, what you go through, what you are accused of~you don't kill your children!!!! Everyone can blame the cops, courts, media, etc., but the FACT is that he killed his kids. And in the most brutal of ways....
