FBI probe dims outlook for 9/11 case at Guantanamo

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) — A pretrial hearing in the Sept. 11 war crimes case has ended at the Guantanamo Bay naval base amid uncertainty over an apparent FBI investigation of the defense.

The military judge ordered a defense team member who was questioned by two FBI agents to submit a sealed affidavit about the encounter. Army Col. James Pohl on Thursday also approved the appointment of a new member of the prosecution team to respond to legal questions regarding the investigation.

Officials say they don't know the scope of the investigation. Judge Pohl says it appears to target the legal team for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the release of writings by the self-proclaimed terrorist mastermind.

It has stalled progress toward trial for the five men charged in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.
