FDA confirms fungicide in orange juice

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration says it has confirmed low levels of an illegal fungicide in orange juice samples taken from Florida manufacturers.

The FDA says the fungicide is far below dangerous levels, the juice is safe to drink and the orange juice won't be recalled from stores or destroyed. The juice tested was mixed with product from Brazil, where the fungicide carbendazim is used.

The government is testing for the chemical in domestic orange juice and in imports because carbendazim is not approved for use on oranges in the United States. It is used in other countries, including Brazil, to combat mold on orange trees.

The test results are the first domestic samples released by the FDA. The government started testing for the chemical after Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, which owns juice brands Minute Maid and Simply Orange, reported finding the chemical in its own juice and in competing juices late last year. Most orange juice products made by Coke and other companies contain a blend of juice from different sources, including Brazil, which is the world's largest orange producer.

The FDA said that nine of 14 samples taken from large holding tanks of juice in Florida tested positive at up to 36 parts per billion. The Environmental Protection Agency has said studies show no risks of consuming the chemical at up to 80 parts per billion and true levels of danger are probably thousands of times higher.

The agency said the juice in the tanks will packaged in hundreds of thousands of retail size containers, so the tests were a good representative sample of what will end up on store shelves. The FDA said it will do follow-up testing at the facilities but did not release the names of the companies where the samples were taken.

Though the EPA says the juice is safe, the FDA is still detaining any orange juice imports that contain the chemical at more than 10 parts per billion, which is the lowest detectable level. The agency has detained almost a quarter of 86 orange juice shipments at the border since the first of the year, hoping to phase the carbendazim out of the U.S. supply.

"We looked at products already in the country and realized there was no safety risk there, and yet carbendazim is technically illegal, we know Brazil uses it and we want to prevent it from entering the country," said FDA spokeswoman Siobhan DeLancey.

All of the imports detained are from Brazil and Canada. Canada doesn't grow oranges but purchases orange juice products from other countries, including Brazil, and then exports it to the United States.

Test results released by the FDA showed the highest levels found were in a Jan. 11 shipment of concentrate from Brazil. That shipment contained up to 60 parts per billion of the fungicide, though most samples were much lower.

When I was pregnant about a year ago, I craved and DRANK a ton of orange juice. I would drink a 64oz bottle about every two days. Simply Orange happened to be my favorite! This REALLY #$%$ me off.

dang girl, that's not good. I on the other hand craved milk. A gallon every two days. 55 pounds later I had a 7 lb. 2 oz boy. Needless to say that was not a great choice either.

Also, your child is now highly likely to be lactose intolerant. Way to go. How about picking up a pregnancy nutrition book before breeding next time?

I live in Georgia and I can tell you that our state still grows peaches, peanuts, blueberries, watermelons, tomatoes, yellow squash, cucumbers, strawberries, pumpkins, cantaloupes, corn and may other things. My parents have their own garden so we don't have to buy most things from someone else but there are actually farms where you can go and pick your own or buy it already picked. When our children were smaller we did this a lot. They especially loved to pick blueberries and strawberries but they would eat about as many as they put in the basket. The owners don't mind if they eat them. They enjoy watching the children having fun as long as they are careful in the rows. These farms sell their fruits and vegetables to local grocery stores as well as chain supermarkets. My parents have pecan trees on their farm and they hire someone to shake the trees with a machine. Then we pick up the pecans by hand and put them in large sacks. Then we can sell them to a broker for a price per pound. They are shelled and packaged and shipped everywhere. I guess because we live here I sometimes take for granted how many things that we have access to that others elsewhere do not have. We have fresh fruits and vegetables of some kind year round here. That's something to be thankful for I suppose.

The FDA again protecting the financial interests of Big Food companies. People who trust the FDA and their lies are fools. A little poison is a lot of poison inside the human body. But that's OK since the FDA actually wants you sick so you can be a good customer for Big Pharma and medicine. I am a physician that is tired of the lies and propaganda.

Far healthier to eat an orange with a glass of water, than to drink the juice, anyway.

So easy to grow your own tree too, so worth it. I planted one a few years ago and get sooo many that I'm able to share them with lots of folks :)

Oh yeah, you can also control what kind of insecticide or how much you use or go organic like I do :)

I have a brita water filter, I make my own juice and smoothies from berries every morning because first, I dont support the big business and second, I dont trust them. Even with all the precautions I take I cant avoid all the krap out there because I have no choice. I wonder if it says on the juice boxes that the oranges come from outside also. I am sure it says "pure florida orange juice", that I would never spend a dime to buy. It makes one sick to see so much ignorance. Arsenic and fungicide and God knows what else. Look at those teens upstate NY coming down with scary neurological disease- spasms, seizures, tics, twitches, and they dare say that its caused by stress. Are you kidding, really? God help us all!!
      • bobby 3 mths ago
you're supporting the Brita business.. LOL

      • Silvana 3 mths ago
Bobby design a filter and I will buy it from you, as I said I avoid as much as I can, living in NYC I dont have many choices- I do my best.

Seems the companies we trust not to poison us are doing it anyway! No more Minute Maid or Tropicana OJ in my household, with all the oranges grown in the US, we dont need any from Brazil, Living in Louisiana, we have oranges here that make great juice, and are way under marketed to anyone not buying from a roadside fruit-stand, or a farmer's market. I will just keep buying mine fresh, make m y own juice, freeze it for the off season, and live fungicide free!

All juices that have illegal fungicides need to be recalled and stop the importation of all our food from 3rd world countries!!! Let all these 3rd worlders drink their own poison!!!!!!!!!!!!! I squeeze my own juice now as most of crap in groceries comes from 3rd worlders!!!! Stop buying products from all who want usa dead!!!!!!!! All this crap of "redistribution of wealth" is horseshit!!! Usa is perfectly capable of wealth redistribtion in our own country--its called "work"!! Stop supporting all who want us dead --!!!!

"The FDA says the fungicide is far below dangerous levels, the juice is safe to drink and the orange juice won't be recalled from stores or destroyed. " Now find the lobbyist, pushing for Brazillian orange imports and which congressman they donate too and see if they have connections to anyone at the FDA such as giving appointments.
    • Roger D  •  3 mths ago
Think it's safe, hell NO. Keep drinking the stuff and will be additive in your body over time. I sure don't believe the FDA saying it is safe to drink. Just like all the growth hormones in the cattle we eat, sure isn't safe. We now use Organic Grass Fed Beef which has a superior taste and is safe to your health. Also drink Organic Milk from Growth Hormone Free cows, excellent flavor. Potatoes from Wisconsin are loaded with fungicides.

How are those Trade Agreements working out so far.?? Our food is coming from all of these countries that use pesticides etc. that are banned as carcinogens in the US and our FDA and government could care less. They hide the truth by not labeling the origin of the foods. THIS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. WE HAVE A RIGHT TO CHOOSE when it comes to putting foods into our bodies from foreign countries. I will NOT buy imported food from Mexico, Central America or South America or China. I have a right to know where my food came from. It takes CONSUMER DEMANDS to force the retailers to insist on labeling that identifies origins of the food they sell. Some foods are labeled but others are not. If a container says FRESH FLORIDA OJ,, it should be 100% from FLORIDA! Otherwise it is FALSE ADVERTISING.
    • good times  •  3 mths ago
if you are sick in any way, start a class action law suit against corporate foods, the FDA and the false advertizers.
    • Norman  •  3 mths ago
Perfectly safe to drink, that the Gov't line? I don't buy it. Maybe a glass of "low level" fungicide OJ isn't harmful, or even a few cartons, but you will not convince me that a lifetime of exposure to these chemicals, even in very low levels, doesn't have extremely deleterious effects, even deadly. It's banned for a reason.

and then you wonder why there are so many people with cancer, because of this and all the other junk they put in all the food, nothing is natural anymore even the meat is not meat anymore or ask McDonalls what do they use for chicken, the only ones that benefit of this are the so called doctors, hospitals.....big business for them.
