FDA plans to regulate some mobile phone apps

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is taking the first steps toward regulating the rapidly expanding field of medical applications, or apps, for smart phones and other handheld devices.

With the rise of the iPhone, Android and other mobile devices has come a flood of applications designed to help people stay healthy. Industry analysts estimate there are already more than 17,000 medical applications available, ranging from calorie counters to programs that let doctors view medical scans on their phones.

The FDA says it will begin regulating a handful of these programs that pose the greatest risk if they don't work appropriately.

In a draft proposal, the agency says it will regulate applications that combine with medical devices already regulated by the agency, such as heart monitors that transmit to a smartphone.

You would rather have NO government inspectors/regulations? Good luck digesting salmonella or e coli!

I hear it digests rather poorly :)

You dont get salmonelle or e coli from a cell phone...
      • Bill M. 10 mths ago
Salmonella is the number one reason I stopped eating my cell phone.

"Food and Drug Administration"? What's that to do with mobile phones?
As long as there are ads for legal dope with side effects like "You Might Die", I think the FDA has other things to worry about.

The Office of Regulatory Affairs, which is a division of the FDA oversees devices used for medical purposes and/or used for viewing/storing medical data.

I have an idea - Rather than cut social security, the Defense Department budget, or raise taxes to get us out of this financial mess, why not scrap the FDA, FCC, TSA, ATF and the rest of these mindless corrupt government agencies that try to control our lives and let the American people live their lives as free men and women (plus save billions of dollars).
      • Hollander 10 mths ago
So you'd protect 90% of the budget and think you're going to accomplish anything? Wow, the agencies are mindless but you don't even know where tax dollars go. See how well our communications industries would work without someone regulating who gets what frequencies, or let's go back to medicine where anyone could claim any benefit without proof or liability.

Government isn't perfect, but neither are you. Work with them to fix it.The article only says that the FDA is going to get involved with regulating apps that interact with devices they're already expected to regulate. That's common sense, not a consipacy.

Hollander - when the TSA forces a physical search on a 90 year old American woman at an airport without having displayed any obvious signs of misconduct or suspicion, then that is a HUGE government failure. The government is taking away our liberty and masking it with poor excuses. The simple fact is that they just want to control you.

Thank God, more regulation. I was worried the Government forgot to hold my hand with the whole debt problem. Glad they found the money to tell me whats best for me and my phone. I will sleep so much better.

Yes, and you'd be the first one to sue if something went wrong and your family member died.

Keep letting them tax you at will, and they will keep coming up with things like THIS to spend it on.

Hey government, I need to go potty, wanna take me to the bathroom too?
    • Alan C  •  10 mths ago
      what a joke.
    • Mike  •  10 mths ago
How about a regulation on how many times they can tax every dollar that I make. How about a regulation on number of people in the national check book, or a regulation on money being given to countries like Pakistan. How about a regulation on how much a representative of the people should be paid to sit in Washington, I think our Founding Fathers would be sick displeasure at some of the people in office. We don't need more regulation, we need honest, and fair representation, and a government that is strong and not up to it's eyebrows in debt trying to figure out how to spend more. I am just saying!!!

The FDA poisons our food, allows GMO to run rampant without letting us test the seed or label it properly, puts arsenic in the chicken, fluoridates the water, & has already allowed an onslaught of lab food to be available. Meanwhile some of the drinks and fast food they allow is out of control. This organization should be shut down.

The American way of life vanishes from the face of the Earth. Approved by the FDA. Yep Yep
    • Aaron Deskins  •  10 mths ago
Well the Government has to protect peoples who are naive against other peoples who just wanna do anything to make money, if you were the victim of this scheme you wouldn't be complaining about regulation, rather advocating. In the Capitalist machine we have - everyone's out to make a buck. That's why the Governmet gets to play parent.

FDA just another program by big brother to monitor you. End the Federation and take back our Country.
    • Chica  •  10 mths ago
First of all, The Office of Regulatory Affairs, which is a division of the FDA, oversees devices used for medical purposes and/or used for viewing/storing medical data. It is regulated to keep that information from being misused or from getting into the wrong hands. It really surprises me that so many people are posting such negative comments about the FDA. Can you imagine the state of medications, vitamins, food, etc. if this administration did not exist? Anyone remember the effects of thalidomide? It was not thoroughly tested, yet given to pregnant women for morning sickness. This resulted in thousands of severe birth defects and infant deaths. Since that ordeal, the FDA imposed far stricter research and quality regulations on all approved drugs. These administrations were put in place to keep us safe, and have largely done so. Chill out, and have some gratitude. No, it is not perfect. But at least there are ways our government tries to look out for public health/interest.
