FDNY: Car submerged in creek, at least 5 injured

NEW YORK (AP) — Rescue divers have pulled five people from a vehicle that became submerged in a New York City creek.

A New York Fire Department spokesman says units responded to a call of a car in Steinway Creek in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens at about 10:35 p.m. Friday. He says four of those recovered from the water are in critical condition. They've been taken to area hospitals.

He says a fifth person is in stable condition and is hospitalized.

About 65 fire fighters and rescue workers from 12 units have responded. The spokesman says rescue divers were still in the water early Saturday.

It wasn't immediately clear how the vehicle became submerged.

The accident occurred on a dead-end street next to the creek in an industrial neighborhood.
