Who Shall I Be Day
It used to be called "My Way Day" but now Wellcat has softened the holiday's title and aligned it with the sentiment of the holiday. Every day people pigeonhole you and try to fit you into a neat little box. Maybe they think you're a player, a hipster, a nerd or an ingenue. On Who Shall I Be Day you can decide who you are, and forget how the rest of the world wants to label you.
Geronimo Death Anniversary
Geronimo had the courage to be himself. He and a group of Native Americans traded furs and belts in Mexico. Their families set up camp near a small city, which was attacked leaving Geronimo's family dead. "At first Geronimo was so sad that he could not eat or sleep, and wandered about in the woods as unhappy as anyone could be; then he began to be angry and wanted to fight all white men, and that is how he first made up his mind to go on the war-path," recalls Major-General O.O. Howard on Access Genealogy.
Geronimo led raids in Arizona and New Mexico. The U.S. Army didn't mess around and sent a 5,000-member army to capture him. He died on Feb. 17, 1909, while confined to Fort Sill, Okla. Geronimo dictated his life story while at the fort, which can be read at First People.
World Human Spirit Day
At 3 p.m. EST Feb. 17, Michael Levy of the Point of Life Foundation of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., invites everyone to meditate and "focus on the true spirit that flows through everything" to bring "healing and peace into the hearts and minds of all humanity." If this fits in with your goal for Who Shall I Be Day, go for it.
National PTA Day
Your child's school might have a PTA or a PTO. A Parent Teacher Organization is independently operated, whereas a Parent Teacher Association pays dues to the National PTA and follows the association's rules. Both types of groups support activities for children and parental involvement. Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst founded the National Congress of Mothers on Feb. 17, 1897, in Washington. "They had a simple idea -- to improve the lives and futures of all of our children," according to the National PTA. Get involved with your school's parent organization.
Cafe au Lait Day
If you're not a big coffee drinker, one way to ease your way into the mix is with a cup of Cafe au Lait. It's a cup of French press (or any) coffee with scalded or steamed milk and topped with milk. Sometimes a dash of cinnamon finishes the hot beverage. If coffee's not your thing, enjoy the flavors of Cafe au Lait in cheesecake.
