Gregorian Calendar Day
Goodbye Julian calendar, hello, Gregorian calendar. The word calendar comes from the "Roman term for the beginning of the month," according to the Galileo Project. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII "ordered 10 days to be dropped from October, thus restoring the vernal equinox at least to an average of the 20th of March. ... To correct for the loss of one day every 130 years, the new calendar dropped three leap years every 400 years," according to the Galileo Project.
Tortilla Chip Day
Like other favorite foods, the tortilla chip was a mistake. Or more accurately, it was a way to save misshapen corn and flour disks. Rebecca Webb Carranza (Nov. 29, 1907, to Jan. 19, 2006) worked for her family at the El Zarape Tortilla Factory. She collected the unsellable tortillas and brought them home. After cutting them into triangles and frying them she served them at a party. Because they were so popular with her guests she started selling "Tort Chips" for 10 cents a bag, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
