Feds crack down on homeopathic weight loss remedy

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators are ordering several companies to stop selling an unproven weight loss remedy that uses protein from the human placenta.

The Food and Drug Administration issued warning letters to seven companies that sell the protein as drops, pellets or sprays. Human chorionic gonadotropin is produced by the placenta and found in the urine of pregnant women. While it is approved for certain infertility treatments, the FDA says there is no evidence it helps reduce weight.

Many of the products cited in the warning letters claim to change "abnormal eating patterns," and help people lose 20 to 30 pounds in as little as a month when used with a low-calorie diet, usually around 500 calories per day.

Health experts say such restrictive diets can be dangerous.

"These products are marketed with incredible claims and people think that if they're losing weight, HCG must be working," said Elizabeth Miller, of FDA's division for non-prescription drugs and health fraud, in a statement. "But the data simply does not support this — any loss is from severe calorie restriction. Not from the HCG."

The products are advertised as homeopathic remedies, or highly diluted drugs made from natural ingredients and sold with medical claims. Many doctors view homeopathic remedies as ineffective but mostly harmless because the drugs in them are present in such tiny amounts.

But the FDA said the products targeted Tuesday could be dangerous when taken as directed.

Homeopathic treatments are based on principles unverified by mainstream science, and often reference mystical-sounding concepts like "vital force" and "healing energy."

In 1938, Congress passed a law granting homeopathic remedies the same legal status as regular pharmaceuticals. The law's principal author was Sen. Royal Copeland of New York, a trained homeopath.

While regulation of the products is minimal, the FDA maintains a list of approved ingredients that can be used for homeopathic drugs. HCG is not among the approved ingredients.

After decades of declining use, homeopathic remedies have revived in recent decades with the burst of interest in vitamins, herbs and other unconventional treatments.

The companies cited by regulators have 15 days to respond and detail how they intend to remove their products from the market. Failure to do so may result in legal action, including seizure and injunction, or criminal prosecution.

Question: Why isn't the FDA "outlawing" severely restrictive diets?? The article clearly states that the diet, not the HCG that has led to desired weight loss. There is NO evidence of harm from HCG. Quite the contrary. Yet, they want to make this ILLEGAL because it "COULD" cause harm. What a crock of bureaucratic #$%$...Hmmmm. Losing money again, "western medicine"??FDA is the biggest bunch of crooks around. Don't think for a MOMENT that they're looking our for what's best for people. Only what's best for some special interest/medically focused group. Like pharmaceuticals.Like physicians.Forget HCG. I'd like to outlaw the FDA. They are SO not what they want us to believe they are.I'll decide for MYSELF whether or not to take HCG!! YOU will NOT decide FOR me, FDA!!

They aren't outlawing HCG, they are outlawing the advertisement of it as a weight loss remedy. There's a difference.

      # of people I know that have tried hcg: over 100
      # of people I know that lost weight quickly: almost all of them
      # of people I know that kept the weight off after: about 20
      # of people I know that were harmed by taking the hcg, homeopathic or otherwise, OR the low calorie diet: 0
BUTT OUT FDA. Protect us from stuff like PhenFen which they allowed and it harmed most of the people who took it. Let us figure out the stuff from the health food stores. We know that there are risks. Government can't follow us around making sure we don't do anything dumb. They can't regulate what or how much we eat.

Are you SURE they can't follow us around? Nah, I'm just being paranoid but just in case I will not say publicly either way if I take HCG.

As the ONLY WAY to get Hcg {Human Chorionic Gonadotropin} is by a legit doctors perscription as HCG is a federaly regulated RX injectable and NOT listed in the homeopathic pharmacopoeia {The FDA regulated list of substances that may be used in Homeopathic tintures}. So as its ILLEGAL to use a RX Drug in Homeopathic tintures I'd sure like to know what their putting in those bottles of WATER their selling to the gulible.

        (Actually, "fraudulent homeopaths" is redundant...)

High fructose corn syrup is still a main ingredient sweetener in most pre-packaged foods.

So what? What's that got to do with the FDA shutting down some homeopathic fraud?

Umm...perhaps it's the restriction of only 500 calories a day that causes the weight loss..not the pills.
      • David M 5 mths ago
Most people would not last a week on 500 calories without the supplement of hcg. I did the diet and it works bottom line. People who have not tried it should not comment from a state of ignorance unless they work for the FDA and have a financial interest protecting their lobbyists.

Screw the feds....who the hell do they think they are? Don't they have some baseball player on steroids to go after or something important like that?

There is one pill that’s guaranteed to help you lose weight but you can only buy one each day and you have to jog a mile to the drug store to buy it each day. They won’t sell it to you if you drive there.

Dr OZ NEVER said he endorsed this diet. If you go to his site he says this: In season 2, we did a show about the HCG diet, a controversial weight loss program. We warned about the potential dangers of this diet overall and told our viewers that any homeopathic or herbal versions purchased on the internet or elsewhere were ineffective.

I agree with the guy 100%.

There is only one weight loss program that works. This program was put forward by comedian George Carlin. He said he wanted to write a weight loss book but it only consisted of 4 words. Now this might be hard for some to understand but here it is EAT LESS, MOVE MORE.

HCG works! Thats why they're trying to pull it. Nothing else has ever worked for me as I struggle with thyroid issues. HCG has also reset my set point! I no longer have weight creeping up. Nothing has ever done this before and I'm ecstatic! Have kept the weight that I lost with HCG for over a year!

WHO would want to ingest placenta or Human chorionic gonadotropin in the first place?!?!

Before the AMA took over, there were two homeopathic organizations in the US. Modern medicine is all for profit, so let's get rid of natural products that work. Remember 15 years ago when they were trying to make herbs illegal? When does it stop?

So when does the government have the right to tell people whats good or bad for them. As far as i knew we were free to do what we chose. People came to america to get away from there government to be free of taxation now look at us and what we have become.

I have hypothyroidism and am on thyroid medication. I tried HCG and I believe that it may have caused a disruption in my thyroid regulation. Just a heads up to anyone who may have the same condition. Many of my friends have lost a great deal of weight using HCG but I unfortunately couldn't take it.

More drug company controlled #$%$ I know several people who tried this product out and it was recommended to them to drop their caloric intake BY 500 calories per day, NOT only eat 500 calories per day......sounds like the feds are dancing to the drug companies tune yet again.....When they can monopolize the production and distribution of this product, they will recommend it......

I'm hearing now that if you lose weight by eating healthy food, exercising and living a balanced lifestyle, the DHS could have you arrested for domestic terrorism. I'll bet their excuse has something to do with being "unAmerican" for not supporting Monsanto and the prescription drug industry (both of which put campaign dollars in politician pockets)!
