    Feds fail to give veterans enough information about benefits: ombudsman

    OTTAWA - The veterans ombudsman says the government is failing former soldiers in the way it tells them whether or not they've qualified for aid.

    A report by Guy Parent says soldiers are not given adequate information about why they are granted or denied disability benefits.

    Parent says providing information to support a decision is fundamentally different from simply providing a reason for a decision.

    And he says veterans have a right to know why and how decisions that affect them are made by the Veterans Affairs Department.

    Parent says the failure to provide reasons for decisions is at odds with the Veterans Bill of Rights and other federal laws.

    He says the department needs to improve the process in four areas, including making sure that reasons for decisions are in plain English, not legalese.
