Feds: Online novel played role in Ga. militia plot

ATLANTA (AP) — A suspected member of a fringe north Georgia militia group intended to use the plot of an online novel as a model for plans to attack U.S. federal law officers and others, authorities said.

Court documents state that 73-year-old Frederick Thomas told others that he intended to model their actions on the online novel "Absolved," which involves small groups of citizens attacking U.S. officials.

The four, who federal authorities arrested Tuesday, were expected to appear in court Wednesday.

They were part of a group that also tried to obtain an unregistered explosive device and sought out the complex formula to produce ricin, a biological toxin that can be lethal in small doses, according to a federal complaint.

The four listed in the indictment are Thomas; Dan Roberts, 67; Ray Adams, 65; and Samuel Crump, 68. The men live in the north Georgia towns of Cleveland and Toccoa.

They had been talking about "covert" operations since at least March, according to court records, discussing murder, theft and using toxic agents and assassinations to undermine the state and federal government.

At one meeting, investigators say, Thomas openly discussed creating a "bucket list" of government employees, politicians, corporate leaders and members of the media he felt needed to be "taken out."

"I've been to war, and I've taken life before, and I can do it again," he told an undercover investigator, according to the records.

Thomas' wife, Charlotte, called the charges "baloney."

"He spent 30 years in the U.S. Navy. He would not do anything against his country," she said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Thomas and Roberts are accused of buying what they believed was a silencer and an unregistered explosive from an undercover informant in May and June. Prosecutors say he discussed using the weapons in attacks against federal buildings.

Prosecutors say Crump also discussed making 10 pounds of ricin and dispersing it in Atlanta and various cities across the nation, suggesting it can be blown out of a car speeding down an interstate highway. Adams, meanwhile, is accused of showing an informant the formula to make ricin and identifying the ways to obtain the ingredients.

Thomas is accused of driving to Atlanta with a confidential informant on May 24 and scoping out an IRS building there and an ATF building "to plan and assess for possible attacks," the indictment states.

"We'd have to blow the whole building, like Timothy McVeigh," Thomas said during the trip to Atlanta, the indictment states.

Charlotte Thomas said her husband was arrested in a restaurant in Cornelia, Ga., and federal agents were at her home when she returned from the grocery store Tuesday afternoon. She said the agents wouldn't let her in her home.

"They tore up my house," Charlotte Thomas said.

She said her husband doesn't have an attorney yet.

Margaret Roberts of Toccoa said FBI agents showed up with a search warrant and went through her home, handcuffing her and taking a computer and other items. She said her husband is retired from the sign business and lives on pensions.

"He's never been in trouble with the law. He's not anti-government. He would never hurt anybody," she said.

Listed numbers for the other two suspects could not be found.

Attorneys for the men were not identified, and the federal defender's office had no immediate comment.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said the case is a reminder that "we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens within our own borders who threaten our safety and security."

Good point. I think it stems from feeling irrelevant and having had to stomach over sixty years of government #$%$

Pretty sure mass murder (i.e. dropping a biological weapon out of a window, on an interstate, in a metro area) is wrong. Try reading the story.

This comment is from one of the "old guys" out here. This incident does not surprise me. People of my generation grew up in a different America where the government was for the most part an extension of "We the people". People of a younger age are able to deal with current global issue better than many of us. The reason is the young have very little to measure current situations against. This is not to imply young people are not in tune with the issues. We have paid in to Social Security for most of our lives and many of us are wartime vets and now much of what we hear is others saying we are asking for welfare. Everyone gets old and will be in the same shoes in a much shorter time than young people want to think. As age comes on you are faced with many challenges such as feelings of not being needed and the fact that life is coming to an end. Some call the result being grouchy and others just say well he is just an old f*a*r*t. Younger people seem to not think of an alternative explanation that we are saddened by what we see American is becoming. I am concerned that we will see an escalation of this type of threat.

I am sickened by the trash in the media and the false promises by politicians while they draw large salaries and receive retirement benefits far better than we who pay their salaries while at the same time, manipulate laws such as those for immigration to win votes from Hispanics and special interest groups. They allow our jobs to be sent to countries with slave labor under the guise of humanitarian reasons while trying to convince us that it is a global economy and we need to be competitive. Unfortunately, that means we must accept slave labor salaries and long working hours to be competitive. How can anyone call this progress?

I do not condone a violent approach to anything but I must admit I can understand how it happens and I do not underestimate people my age in being able to carry it out. We need to remember that many my age have excellent training from the armed forces on how to exact punishment when necessary. Unfortunately, we citizens seem to be more concerned than our government because they continue to spew the same old b*u*l*l*s*h,,,. I just pray that a solution is found without violence but I am growing more concerned each day. I hate to think this way but I guess it is a result of just being an "old f*a*r*t that is in danger of loosing faith in the America I have known.

They can't even keep people out of our borders. they just let them in and sue anyone that tries to stop them. Our government sides with the UK faster than it does with it's own people. Guess that's what happens when you have a foreigner running the country.. All I know is, since Obama has been in office our government has been working against the very people that put them where they are today!!

The US Goverment is not designed for the people of this country, it is designed for banks and businesses. Isnt it just neat how our government gives themselves pay raises and unlimited benefits.... years ago 26 states voted to term limits to represent their states in Washington DC,,,,, the us govt went to the us supreme court and had the so called free peoples voting decisions ovwerthrown as the us govt feels their jobs are careers.... and then you have the us govt saying you can have a bb gun and sling shot but not a automatic rifle. we are treated like citizens of other countries......

      JAMES MADISON said

"Americans [have] the right and advantage of being armed, unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust their people with arms."

      THOMAS JEFFEERSON said

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a moneyed aristocracy that has set the government at defiance. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs." Thomas Jefferson

"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." Thomas Jefferson

Our current government should be disbanded and a new government be put into place to represent people versus businesses and the filthy rich.....

USA states it is a free country.... think about it ....... are you free to live free in this country or are you just slave with a ponzi scheme retirement program called Social Security.....

      God Bless America

lets just let GOD run things the way the Bible says we should be........

Kind of shows the mood of the country towards our government when veterans in their sixties and seventies are doing thiungs like this. Wake up America before it's too late if it's not already. Time for a new government way of thinking to take care of the people it is supposed to represent.

Hey Parents Television Council: Looks like books, not just video games, rap music and TV make people violent too! Better start banning them, huh?
    • RockJumper  •  6 mths ago
People, mostly us over the age of 50 or so, remember how good this country once was. But then, our own generation got into office and really screwed up our lives and our futures. So yes, we're #$%$ We want things the way they were. Remember those days; the days before Reagan starting sending all of our jobs to China, before our taxes were supporting 48 other countries, before our elected politicians allowed our immigration laws to go unheeded so that they could get another voting block. The days when you could walk downtown and easily get a job. If you younger folks think things are screwed now, the worst is yet to come. The United Nations being the ruling authority, The World Bank being the financial center, NATO being the military enforcer. I don't condone violence, but I do condone using your voting power to get these career politicians out of office, putting term limits to a public vote, taking away congress's ability to vote themselves pay raises while they mess over everyone else. And if you older folks have children who are in the military, police, or sheriff agencies, talk to your kids. Explain to them what is going on in the country as far as big banking take over. Because if they do not understand, the day will come when the government, be it city, county, or federal, will pit your children against the people of the United States of America. Will they shoot their own people? Use of tear gas and tasers will expand into more powerful ways to control "the crowd" as the people stride toward another revolution to get their country back.

The government wants you to believe they can give you wealth and safety. All you have to do is give up your liberty, and especially "the spirit of liberty," to quote Sam Adams.
    • Alex  •  Roanoke, United States  •  6 mths ago
Edcar Casey predicted that this very thing would happen as a result of the government's stealing of Social Security Funds that belong to the PEOPLE of this country. NOT the politicians. If they left SSA funds alone, as was perscribed by law when it was established that NO ONE could take those funds for any other purpose other than retirees it would be solvent today! But they put in IOU's and then took the funds for their own interests and pet projects. No wonder it's broken. It's never been paid back the funds that were borrowed.
This is why people of this age bracket are upset, angry, and resort to violence.
Can you blame them? I can't! They paid in to the SSA for 30,40,50 years and what do they get now? They live on Alpo dog food and have to give up their RX's just to pay their electric bills & taxes. God Bless these poor folks. Their loosing alll they have worked for their entire lives.

This is where the REAL world leaders plot how they will move their New World Order agenda forward. Starting just prior to WWI at the Carnegie Foundation for International Peace where it was agreed that "in time of war, the people will tolerate a collectivization of control: mandate, and people do what they're told to do." They said, "That should be set up so that it's the permanent pattern of our society." By taking control of the economy - illegally replacing the gold standard through the Federal Reserve Act - they could manipulate markets, anything. Think about it: Why is the US involved in all of these SELECTIVE foreign wars? Oil? Why not just tap the oil resevoirs in Utah and Colorado that contain more oil than the entire Middle East combined? It would help out our economy too! And for their G20 meeting they enact martial law on the citizens? "Those who would give up an essential liberty for temporal security deserve neither liberty nor security." -Benjamin Franklin.
