Female Ark. prison guard killed checking on inmate

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A convicted murderer stabbed a female guard to death at an east Arkansas prison Friday while she was investigating whether he had an unauthorized pair of shoes, a prison spokeswoman said.

Sgt. Barbara Ester, 47, was stabbed in the side, abdomen and chest at about 12:30 p.m., said Shea Wilson, a spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Correction. Ester died about 3 p.m. at a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., about 40 miles away.

Ester, a 12-year veteran of the correction department, was a property officer who investigated whether inmates had contraband items. Wilson said the guard had received a report that Johnson had a pair of contraband shoes.

"This is obviously very difficult for the department when something tragic like this happens," Wilson said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Ester's family. These officers — it's a tight-knit workplace. They look out for each other and are there together for a lot of hours of the day, so this is very difficult for everyone."

Wilson said the prison was locked down after the attack and that the inmate, Latavious Johnson, was being moved to the state's maximum-security unit at Varner. She said all the other inmates have been accounted for. Prison officials haven't said specifically what Johnson used during the attack, only that it was an object that had been sharpened.

Johnson, 30, was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder out of Jefferson County. He was sentenced in 2000 for killing his father. Prosecutors said Johnson was 18 at the time of the crime.

Wilson said Johnson had had several disciplinary infractions, including one this week for not obeying orders, but hadn't previously attacked a guard.

"We will move him to the supermax (prison) so he will be out of that environment ... He needed to be out of that environment," Wilson said.

Arkansas State Police and the prison's internal affairs staff were investigating the stabbing. Wilson said authorities would turn over their information to prosecutors, who will determine whether to file charges against the inmate.

While I'm not defending life sentences, the problem with them is that it give the prisoner no reason to comply with any rules, regulations, commands, etc.

So what, if they violate them, or as this one did, kill a guard or another inmate? What are the consequences going to be, another life sentence?

Life sentences should be eliminated & replaced with the death penalty, after the appeals process has run it's course.

As to inmates acquiring & using weapons, lethal force should be employed in all cases, with no warning. If an inmate is attacking anyone, inmate or staff, with a weapon, they should be shot.

Start killing those using weapons & see how long it takes for inmates to decide that it's not a good idea to use a weapon

As to the comment that inmates should be given more to do, I'll say this: Prison is not a day care, or summer camp, for convicted criminals. It is a punishment. TV's, gym equipment, canteen with snacks etc., are not punishment. Vocational school, or college classes are not punishment.

In Missouri the guy would probably be rewarded with a puppy.....the Mo. DOC director is noted to be hostile towards the officers here.

I don't know if Arkansas have the ELECTRIC CHAIR or not but I wish they did, this fella had to have done something to be there in the first place, and since he was there he should just serve his time and move on. I do not believe this fella should be put to death I'd rather see him be resentence to life in prison starting today NAKED FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. EDDIE

to adc staff this is what happens when you allow the inmates the ark. dept. of corrections to lay around all day with no job assignments other than working in the kitchen and sweeping and cleaning the floors consist of about 3 hours a day while some of the inmates go to class the rest if the inmates lay around in their beds and causing trouble with the officers you need to implement the hoe squad to work 8 hours a day instead of 4 hours a day now and then and this rule you have if its to hot or cold you cant work the inmates look at your records i bet you havent worked the inmates 20 days in the past 365 days on the hoe squad it saddens me to think that my tax dollar is paying for saleries for so many wardens and assited wardens in one unit and you cant keep officers like the one tha was brutily murdered in east arkansas you tie your officers up with unnessasary paper work to keep them off the floor from doing their job
