FFA says awaiting word on Rhys Williams injury
SYDNEY (AP) — Football Federation Australia says it is "anxiously awaiting" news on the extent of what appears to be a serious Achilles tendon injury suffered by Socceroos defender Rhys Williams while playing for Middlesbrough on Tuesday.
Williams went down just before halftime in Middlesbrough's scoreless draw at home to Wigan Athletic in the Championship, causing a lengthy stoppage. A leg brace was applied and he was provided with oxygen on the pitch. It was not immediately known which leg was affected.
The versatile Williams can play at the centerback, fullback and in defensive midfield positions and was considered a near-certainty to be chosen for Australia's World Cup squad for Brazil.
He has played 14 matches for Australia since 2009, but missed the 2010 World Cup with a serious pelvic injury.
