How have Adam and Jon launched a successful global business in such a short time? The answer, not surprisingly, is a great working relationship. Here are some of their Top Tips to building a successful business with someone who has always been your best friend and is now your business partner.
- Both partners must have diverse, yet complementary skill sets and each partner must hold themselves accountable in their respective roles within the organization.
- Keep your eyes on the ball. Just like a marriage, disagreements and debates are normal, even welcome. At the end of the day, both partners have to resolve their issues and get back on track, looking at their long-term business goals.
- Surround yourself with cranky critics who don’t hold back from providing all the feedback you really don’t want to hear. Negativity brings positive results. “If one person doesn’t like a new product, I can live with that,” says Jon. “But when ten people pipe up with their negative reviews, we know it’s time to go back to the drawing board.”
- Look at the Big Picture. “We are always looking two or three moves ahead, just like in chess,” says Adam. “We don’t want to sell only one product line to a retail partner; we want to sell five lines. We don’t want to sell only in Canada; we want to sell on a global scale. This strategy has paid off for us.”
- Stay hungry. Once you become content, an amazing amount of opportunities will just pass you by.
- Keep your ear to the ground. Valuable communication flows from the bottom up at FHE. We check our egos at the door and listen carefully to our team. The shippers, the sales team and our admin staff share vital information that may lead to our continued success.
