‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Whips Past $500M At Worldwide Box Office
Breathlessly crossing thresholds since its worldwide rollout began on February 11, Fifty Shades Of Grey has now passed the $500M global box office mark. The milestone came today with the worldwide to-date total at $502M ($150M domestic/$352M international). This is the latest in the book-to-screen transfer’s multiple high points. Last weekend, it became Universal’s biggest R-rated film of all time internationally. (And that’s without China.)
The Sam Taylor-Johnson-helmed adaptation of EL James’ bestselling lip-biter has topped the worldwide charts each of the past three weeks. Among other records set, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan’s Ana and Christian had the highest opening ever for an R-rated film globally — good for Universal’s third highest-grossing opening ever.
Domestically, Fifty Shades topped the charts two weeks in a row, and its opening in 3,646 North American theaters marked the biggest R-rated wide theatrical release in history (based on theater count). It was the highest three-day February weekend opening ever ($85.2M); the top three-day Valentine’s weekend opening ever; the best Valentine’s Day opening ever ($36.8M) and the top four-day President’s Day weekend opening of all time.
Would you like more? Fifty Shades also had the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film ever at the international box office and set a record as Universal’s highest grossing day ever overseas on Saturday, February 14 with $55M.
The top-grossing overseas markets include the UK, Germany, France, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Russia, Australia and Mexico.
Censors in some territories, including Malaysia and most recently India, have blocked the film (China was not approached), but that hasn’t seemed to put too much of a wrinkle into Mr Grey’s perfectly tailored suits. The remaining territory, Egypt, opens on March 11.
