Filipino leader to visit China amid Spratlys rift

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — President Benigno Aquino III plans to visit China in coming weeks but the friendly gesture doesn't mean the Philippines is backing down from its assertions Chinese forces intruded in its waters, an official said.

The Philippines alleges Chinese forces intruded at least nine times into Manila-claimed areas in the Spratly Islands since February, allegations that sparked an exchange of diplomatic protests and verbal jabs. Aquino has strongly criticized China, saying two weeks ago that his country would not be bullied by China in the disputed region.

The presidential trip will likely take place in late August or early September, Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Thursday.

The Spratlys, a chain of barren, largely uninhabited islands, reefs and banks in the South China Sea are claimed wholly by China, Taiwan and Vietnam and partly by the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. The islands are believed to be atop vast oil and gas deposits.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jianchao has denied his government committed any intrusion but acknowledged that Chinese vessels were exercising Beijing's sovereign rights in one incident at the Reed Bank near the Spratlys. Philippine officials complained the Chinese vessels harrassed a Philippine oil exploration ship into leaving the Reed Bank in March.

Just before he traveled last week to Washington, del Rosario said he was told that the Philippine military was verifying another foreign intrusion into a Manila-claimed Spratlys area.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave strong assurances that the U.S. is committed to the defense of the Philippines and would provide affordable weaponry amid mounting tensions in the Spratlys, del Rosario said.

Del Rosario said he separately gave U.S. defense officials a list of equipment the Philippines needs to improve its capability to monitor foreign intrusions in its territorial waters near the Spratlys.

Clinton assured del Rosario that the U.S. would honor its 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines that calls on each country to help defend the other against an external attack by an aggressor in their territories or in the Pacific region, he said.

Del Rosario said he told U.S. officials that if the Philippines receives defense equipment, "we become a stronger ally for you."

China says it has sovereign rights over the South China Sea. It has also criticized the U.S. for its involvement, saying disputes over sea claims should be handled by the parties directly involved.

lots of reasons for the u.s. to get involved. a little war would surely derail china's economic power push bet not only the americans would love that. but hey, that would sit well with the others involved in this fire dance.

the war will screw the philipinos and profit both china and us.

A war with any of the South East Asian would benefit everyone except for China and the country it attack. China can not support it population of 1.4 billions with resources and fight a war. Look what happen to the US within just 10 year in Afghanistan and Iraq it drain the US dry and China is no where near the US in economic or military might. China would explode from within and break apart. Same thing happen to Russia in the 80s.

If China goes to war with anyone other countries that don't like China will give arms to the opponent to prolong the war and force China to collapse economically and militarily. Due remember China like Russia in the past want to be the #1 superpower and replace the US not do silly things and shot themself.

Steve, I' don't know too many white guys that'll take on a brown man's Avatar with Pinoy styled hair like you have and is challenged by the English language as much as you are. Kindly stop attempting to be someone you're not & be proud of being a Filipino. Your country needs more people that are proud of their heritage to assist your kaibigan in every way possible. AND this is coming from a white man.

china not only wants the spratly islands but also wants to become dominant in arms race. china has powerful warheads, aircraft carriers, etc., however they are yet to be proven in real war. they still dont know the actual capabilities of their weapons. with their adaptation of advance technology with cheap labor, they could surely beat the US in selling warheads. hence, they need to start or involve in a war to show other countries/clients how capable their warheads are. china will not start a war with philippines or any other countries because they value so much their name to international community, but they will make a way for other countries to start a war with them. exactly what they are doing now. they are a master of provocation and scapegoat just like their allies north korea and iran

Pnoy's visit to China will only provoke the people there to stage protest against us and to cause them to be more firm about their claim. That will worsen the situation. It's the chinese leaders who should visit us here to justify their peaceful intention. I doubt they would do that. Pnoy might risk himself there.

Visiting china is one way to show to them that we are sincere in our plans for a diplomatic and peaceful solution to the problem. Only thing is..... hope the President will stand by the Philippines. Hope he will not be the second GLORIA.
This will be the greatest test on his part.

China should realized that PHL is taking this in a proper way aside from understanding that we need respect..They also should realize that we are no easy target Filipinos are figthers both diplomatically and in times of country defense!!

Why is he going there at this time, or is it that he is showing that he is two faced ?
      • Fight4Love 11 mths ago
I think no, he is there to say: don't use any force in the disputed area in all its aspect like ramming the oil exploration boat despite of overlapping territory... something like that. any diplomatic means to keep peace.

President Aquino visit to China is a pragmatic move. The Chinese does not want a confrontation nor a conflict in the South China Sea with her neighbours. I belief the Chinese are willing to have joint development in the South China Sea. In the 90s, the prime minister of Malaysia then, Dr Mahathir was explicit when he advocated to the Asean community that the United States should stay away the problems in the South China Sea.Having joint exercises with the US are for feeling good only, the Navies of Asean countries are not compatible in terms of asset, doctrine, operational chain of command etc. On most of the occasions the Yanks (US Forces) tends to be very arrogant consequently at the end of the exercise there were animosity rather than goodwill.Mutada Al Sadr, the Muslim #%#$% leader in Iraq once told his Sunni adversary a few years ago to cooperate with him as the US is not going be there forever.Likewise should there be a shootout in the South China Sea, again the US forces are not going to fight forever. As it is, the ongoing conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan has cost the US in the region of 4 trillion dollars. Quote; affordable weaponry means the Filipino has to pay for it. With 4 million going hungry, major source of revenue being repatriation of funds by oversea workers, it is best to seek a peaceful solution with Beijing.
      • Tim Jones 11 mths ago
That's retarded joint development with China in the Philippine 200 miles EZ. Why don't the South East Asian countries go to China 200 EZ and have a joint development then. What a retard to even suggest such a thing.

vienam and china will have a war?
    • Mike  •  11 mths ago
I hope all involved can solve their differences without bloodshed or further "saber rattling". The U.S. doesn't need another conflict to finance, but if necessary, we would defend the Philippines whatever it took. A finer ally we will never find. They are not strong in materials but they make up for it in heart and fighting spirit. Semper Fi!

You can't negotiate with China. Do you even think that they would share Spratleys? Their greedy
    • Darth Yukat  •  11 mths ago
The President in my opinion is the face of the Filipino people, wherever he goes he represents the country. PNOY going to China could give several impressions to his critics, but for me it would give the impression of BRAVERY. For all we know he would be an easy target for the Chinese people. As a leader of our country going to the territory of a potential enemy (i say potential since they have not launched war yet) is risky amidst all the tension that is happening right now. The other thing would be showing the world that we are noble people and that we at all times put peace negotiations first and war would only be the last resort.

My only hope is that he will not sell us to the Chinese.
