Filipino militants free US teen after 5 months

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A 14-year-old American boy who was abducted with his mother and cousin by suspected Muslim militants in the southern Philippines was released from five months of jungle captivity, the Philippine military said.

The boy, Kevin Lunsmann, was recovered late Saturday by a village official in Lamitan town on southern Basilan Island, a stronghold of al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf rebels who are believed to be behind the kidnapping, said military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang.

He is now safe in military custody, Cabangbang said, without offering other details.

U.S. Ambassador Harry Thomas said the boy would be reunited with his family soon.

"In this holiday season nothing makes me happier than knowing that an innocent victim is returned to his family in time for holiday celebrations," Thomas said in a statement Sunday.

"I also want to acknowledge the courage of Kevin himself, and his family, throughout this long ordeal," Thomas said.

He said there would be a "speedy investigation and prosecution of all those involved in the kidnapping of American citizens."

The boy's Filipino-American mother, Gerfa Yeatts Lunsmann, was freed two months ago after she was dropped off by boat at a wharf on Basilan. Their Filipino cousin, Romnick Jakaria, dashed to freedom last month when special Philippine army forces managed to get near an Abu Sayyaf camp in the mountains of Basilan.

They were believed to be held for ransom, but Cabangbang did not say whether any was paid.

The three were vacationing with relatives on an island near Zamboanga city when they were snatched July 12 and taken by boat to nearby Basilan. The captors then called the family in Campbell County, Virginia, to demand a ransom.

The U.S. and Philippine governments did not pay any ransom for the mother's release, Interior Secretary Jessie Robredo said in October, adding that he was unaware whether any private group did.

Ransom kidnappings have long been a problem in the impoverished region and are blamed mostly on the Abu Sayyaf, a group on a list of U.S. terrorist organizations and notorious for beheadings and bombings over the past two decades.

Its stated goal has been the establishment of an Islamic state in the southern Philippines, home to minority Muslims in the predominantly Christian nation.

The Abu Sayyaf was founded on Basilan in the 1990s as an offshoot of a violent Muslim insurgency that has been raging for decades.

Hundreds of U.S. troops have been stationed in the southern Philippines, including Basilan, to train and equip Philippine forces but are prohibited from engaging in local combat.

On Monday, suspected militants abducted Australian Warren Richard Rodwell, 53, from his seaside house in Zamboanga Sibugay province, near Basilan, but it was not immediately confirmed if they also belonged to the Abu Sayyaf.

The militants are also holding an Indian, a Malaysian and a Japanese.

Nicholas, I appreciate that you have traveled to the Philippines 4 times in 2008/09. But obviously you are not aware of the desperation of these groups that require funds to survive. As for your comments of "just maintain awareness in your surrounding area", I'm afraid that will not guarantee you safety. I have been visiting the Philippines for 16 years and I now semi-permanently reside here with my Filipina wife and children and I cannot stress enough that foreigners should NOT travel to that part of the Philippines for safety reasons. There are plenty of beautiful areas of this wonderful country to visit and explore, so why would one risk their safety by travelling to an area that is renowned for this type of behaviour. I suggest it is better to be safe than sorry, so my advice to would-holiday makers is to avoid that area at all costs.

It's too bad General Douglas MacArthur isn't still around...I bet he would make short work of these guys.

Just like he did with the Koreans? A obtuse, ineffectual government is kryptonite to a great General.

Yea but there would be some little A hole like Truman to get in the way.

You're so wrong. The general you are looking for is General Pershing, not MacArthur. And just so you know, Basilan and the entire Sulu sea has never been conquered by foreign invaders. Not the Spanish, not the Japanese, and not the Jolo.

Muslim is a dreadful disease that is spreading all over the world. It hides under the pretense of a religion serving a higher power. It violates human rights. It kills in the name of God. They terrorize and kill those who think different. They seek out Christians in their own countries to destroy. But demand freedom in world to worship as they see fit. We must call evil when we see evil and not back down from it.

Stupid Muslims are the same all over the world. Until they all kill each other, which should be soon based on the work being done in Syria and Iraq, stay out of 3rd world Muslim countries. Why take a chance?

As a 24 year old American guy, I have traveled to the Philippines 4 times. (January & July 2008, April & December 2009). I have stayed a few weeks in Zamboanga City on 3 occasions. For all of the people who will read this posting, please don’t be completely alarmed and discouraged from traveling down there. And no, you do not have to hire an armed escort like several advisory boards suggest. My wife and two daughters lived there among the heavy Muslim population until they arrived in the US in July 2010. As my wife is catholic, there is a sense of hostility and intentions to provoke the diversity of religions. For unruly means of violence and prime factors of hatred towards foreigners, I am just appalled on why every time I travel to that area, I never encounter any sort of discrimination. Even as a soldier in the US Army traveling there for vacation, I stuck out like a sore thumb. I stayed relaxed but maintained vigilant. If you stay active and alert to your surroundings, you will have no issues because the individuals that have acts of violent behavior to foreigners will observe that you are indeed staying alert. I HAVE PERSONELLY OBSERVED AND ACKNOWLEDGED THIS. Despite all the negative headlines and news about this region of the Philippines, I have had quite the honor and blessings to walk around freely and experience the two shopping malls, the ship docks and Fort Pilar. In one case, I was privileged in gaining entry to the Zamboanga City Prison and touring the facility as well as interacting with the inmates. The unfortunate case of the young American teen boy who was kidnapped, he displayed a lack of awareness to his immediate surroundings. Even as a young teen that is not familiar with the host nation community, there should be no reason on why he was taken in the first place regardless of the situation or the circumstances around it. If you are traveling to this region of the Philippines, JUST MAINTAIN AWARESS TO YOUR SURROUNDING AREA. I'm a living proof of this simple strategy!

In this day and age, people can still hide in a jungle? Really? I find that hard to believe when we can watch Bin laden killed on live feed....
    • InfidelHere  •  5 mths ago
Ransom is a popular means that MUSLIMS have used many times before to fund their world wide jihad! Case in point, we tried to appease MUSLIMS back over 200 years ago when nearly 25% of our federal budget was used to PAY OFF MUSLIMS who were pirating our ships along the North Africa coast...finally President Jefferson had enough and dispatched our newly formed Marines to deal with this cancer!..."to the shores of Tripoli" (today, part of the US Marine Hyme)
    • InfidelHere  •  5 mths ago
And people think MUSLIMS only cause HOLY HELL on this earth in the middle east!! No - - this muslm cancer is everywhere! Bottom line is that if we can't even call out the “WHY?” (cult ideology called ISLAM) and the “WHO?” (“good” muslims) that we are fighting along with understanding that a “War on Terror” is their tactic or “HOW?”, then our idiotic PC self-deception will eventually defeat us!!

Kidnapping children is endorsed by Islam? They should get a new imam.
