Brevard-based company offering six $1,000 grants to STEAM teachers for class projects

STEAM teachers eager to make next year extra-special for their students: A Brevard-based company is offering six $1,000 grants to help make educators' dream projects happen.

BRPH, an architecture, engineering, design and construction firm with a technical focus, started here on the Space Coast in 1964. Though it has offices throughout the country, its headquarters remain in Melbourne. This year, the company will offer grants to six teachers in Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

"BRPH has been providing architecture, design and engineering services for the education market throughout our 60-year history and we’re deeply invested in improving the lives of faculty, staff and students," said Janie McDermott, vice president, CHRO and principal at BRPH.

"We are especially proud to support the hard-working teachers in the districts where we do business and to help inspire the next generation of STEAM scholars who will one day join us as architects, engineers and constructors."

What does the grant cover?

Six $1,000 grants will be awarded to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics teachers in select counties throughout Florida, Alabama and Georgia. These grants will go toward hands-on STEAM-related projects that teachers otherwise might not have funds to pursue.

Who is eligible?

Florida teachers in Brevard, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties are eligible, as well as Alabama teachers in Madison County and Georgia teachers at Atlanta public schools and in Cobb, DeKalb, Fayette, Forsyth and Fulton counties.

The contest is open to public, charter and private schools.

How do teachers apply?

Teachers must apply by Aug. 31 online at The University Network's wesbite. They'll be asked to provide a detailed description of a proposed project, including how that project relates to STEAM; an explanation regarding how the proposed project will provide "hands-on, immersive" lessons to encourage students to become more interested in STEAM; and a budget and timeline explaining how funds will be spent and how many students will be impacted.

Recipients of the grants will be announced in September.
