MDARD: Byron Center Meats gets $70K grant

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Byron Center Meats, a family-owned meat processing plant, will use a $70,000 grant to build a new cold storage facility, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says.

The grant, part of the Food and Agriculture Investment Program, was approved Wednesday by the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to a release from MDARD.

Byron Center Meats plans to use the $70,000 to build a new cold storage facility. MDARD says this will expand the plant’s hanging carcass capacity by 35%, increase its process capacity by 25% and create four new jobs.

Local livestock producers will also benefit, according to MDARD.

“We are blessed to work with thousands of Michigan livestock producers and partner together to grow their businesses and serve their customers by getting more products to market,” said owners Steve and Laura Sytsma in a statement.
