Wondering if your name is on this list? Unclaimed money in state records puts cash in hand

Have you ever been cleaning out your car, looked under the driver seat and found an old dollar bill or two? Well, you might be able to do something similar by taking a few short steps online.

Massachusetts residents and businesses can search a database created by the state Unclaimed Property Division and potentially claim money owed to them without charge.

Unclaimed property is monetary assets that have been left behind or forgotten about, such as checking and saving accounts, uncashed checks or proceeds from insurance policies, the agency says.

For example, the database shows Provincetown Bike Rentals LLC is able to claim nearly $18,000, Stephen Duff Construction LLC in Barnstable is owed $213 and Bourne Youth Lacrosse of Pocasset can claim $649 — just to name a few. Individual residents are also able to claim funds.

On average, 1 in 10 people have unclaimed property with the average claim in 2021 being around $734, according to the Unclaimed Property Division. In 2023, the agency had around $3 billion in unclaimed property, and in 2022, it was able to return more than $174 million in cash and securities.

In order to file a claim, the agency urges potential claimants to visit the website of the Unclaimed Property Division and fill out a claim for free.
