Fire at Conn. home kills ad exec's 3 kids, parents

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Fire swept through an advertising executive's Victorian home along the Connecticut shoreline, killing her three children and her parents.

Madonna Badger and a male acquaintance were able to escape from the house as it was engulfed by flames on Christmas morning, Stamford police Sgt. Paul Guzda said. But Badger's three daughters — a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins — died in the fire, Guzda said.

He said Badger's parents, who were visiting for the holiday, also died in the blaze.

Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. and rushed outside to help, but they could only watch in horror as flames devoured the grand home and the shocked, injured survivors were led away from the house.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening.

Property records show she bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house is situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The male acquaintance who also escaped the blaze was a contractor who was doing work on the home, Guzda said. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

"It is a terrible, terrible day," Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at the scene of the fire. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."

Police officers drove Badger's husband, Matthew Badger, from New York City to Stamford on Sunday morning. Badger's parents lived in Southbury, Conn., Guzda said.

Firefighters knew there were other people in the home but could not get to them because the flames were too large and the heat too intense, said Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte, his voice cracking with emotion.

"It's never easy. That's for sure," he said. "I've been on this job 38 years ... not an easy day."

Conte said fire officials don't yet know the cause of the blaze and likely would not get clues for a few days until fire marshals can enter the structure and examine it.

By Sunday evening, the roof of the blackened house had largely collapsed.

A neighbor, Sam Cingari Jr., said he was awakened by the sound of screaming and saw that the house was engulfed by flames.

"We heard this screaming at 5 in the morning," he said. "The whole house was ablaze and I mean ablaze."

Cingari said he did not know his neighbors, who he said bought the house last year and were renovating it.

Charles Mangano, who lives nearby, said his wife woke him up and alerted him to the fire. He ran outside to see if he could help and saw a number of fire trucks in front of the house.

"I heard someone yell 'Help, help, help me!' and I started sprinting up my driveway," Mangano told The Advocate of Stamford.

He told the newspaper he saw a barefoot man wearing boxers and a woman being taken out of the house. The outdoor temperature at the time was below freezing, according to the National Weather Service.

The woman said, "My whole life is in there," Mangano said. "They were both obviously in a state of shock."

Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.

Badger was the creative mind behind major advertising campaigns for leading fashion brands, including the iconic Marky Mark underwear ads for Calvin Klein.

Raised in Kentucky, Badger began her career working as a graphic designer in the art department of Esquire magazine. Before starting her own company, she worked as an art director for several magazines and CRK, the in-house advertising agency for designer Calvin Klein.

Badger & Winters has worked with Proctor & Gamble, CoverGirl, A/X Armani Exchange, Emanuel Ungaro and Vera Wang, among other high-profile corporations. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.

Wow. And I thought I had a bad Christmas. They had the worst Christmas ever. This makes me thankful for the family I have. Though they maybe crazy and filled with drama, at least I have them. I will share this story so others can be thankful as well.

I feel for that family. My hearts goes out to them.

So sad. All the money in the world is not nearly as important as the human loss in this fire.
Many lives touched by the losses here.

This is why you should never let a day go by that you don't tell the people you care about what they mean to you!

Even if you let a day or several go by, if your loved ones KNOW you absolutely love them, you and everything else will be fine. You show this in everything you do with them. Take nothing for granted and always maintaining trust, care, and love.

firefighter here, I can honestly that the heat is sometimes so intense your mind won't let your body go into the heat. I've been in fires where the heat is so intense that we couldn't go into a burning apartment even in full turnout gear. So give the lady a break!!

Anyone who says there's no way they could leave the home without their children, pets, loved ones, etc. have never been in a massive fire. Sometimes the path to the loved ones is totally blocked by falling debris, fire, or intense smoke. Sometimes leaving and trying to re-enter is the ONLY choice. I've had friends in such fires who've had to leave loved ones behind because there was *****NO***** choice. Perhaps even the mother thought her children were already outside (I've heard of that happening as well). Have a heart, have sympathy! My prayers and thoughts are will the woman who lost her family.

By the looks of the house, it appears that the fire started in one of the upper floors. The kids and parents were probably sleeping in the upper floors, and possibly the two survivors were on the ground floor. OMG, the pain that survivors of such tragedies have to live with must be unbearable!

This is such a terrible tragedy for anyone to experience. It tears my heart out knowing that the little ones never had a chance to live their lives due to such a horror situation and on Christmas Day.
As a contractor I have worked on many different jobs that involved fire damaged homes and I was able to hear the horror stories from the very ones who experienced their house being on fire and lived to tell us about it. So sad it was to listen as they described what they went through.
To all you heartless people that are saying what you would have done, just save it because you have no clue what you would do in such a terrible situation. As I said, I have seen the destructive devastation that home fires produce and my heart and prayers go out to everyone involved.

If you have ever been in a fire then you would know that everthing is so disoriented around you! You can't find anything when the smoke is that thick and the heat is so intense! If you can breath then you're lucky!

First: Deepest condolences to the Badger family, her parent's family and all those who know them.

Second: Go to the website for the Hartford Courant to get a more accurate account of this tragic situation.
For all who want to know: she did try to save her children-Yahoo did not have all the information in its initial story. Details are now coming out. The grandfather was found on the roof near one of the windows where he was trying to reach one of the girls. Their room was on the third floor. The mother apparently had climbed up either the scaffolding or some other type of ladder to try and reach them. She was the one who told the first responders where her children were and had to be restrained from reentering the burning home.

Third: It is always easy to say what we would or would never do when we have never been faced with that situation. I do not doubt the sincerity of every parent who has stated they would rather die trying to save their children than save themselves. But none of you was inside that house...none of you know what she did or did not do before she even came outside to try and reach them that way.

Last: to all who posted jokes and ignorant comments, may God help your souls when your day of adversity comes. And it will come.

God says , "mourn with those that mourn..." Have compassion and be kind and love your neighbor as yourself. It is not time to attack survivors of this tragedy. Let us not lose sight of a distraught father losing his children and wife....and a mother losing her children and parents,,,,,,,,,whoever the contractor was I am sure he is not happy......pray for these poor people....it is very horrible for all.......it is very sad to hear this news,,,,and sad to hear how callous some of us have become..........
