Fire engulfs truck Thursday on I-95 in Martin after car crashes back up traffic earlier

MARTIN COUNTY ― A trio of traffic collisions and fire backed up traffic morning and afternoon through part of the county on Interstate 95 Thursday, according to emergency responders.

Firefighters battled a blaze that engulfed a pickup on the northbound lanes of I-95 near Southwest Citrus Boulevard in Palm City around 12:40 p.m., said Cory Pippin, a spokesperson for Martin County Fire Rescue.

No one was injured and all lanes were closed except for the fast lane for 2 miles of I-95 through Palm City, Pippin said.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers also reported a vehicle crash with injuries on I-95 in Palm City at 8:36 a.m., which caused a temporary roadblock.

A white Mercedes was traveling north on I-95 before reportedly cutting off a box truck, Pippin said.

The truck rear-ended the Mercedes, which veered off the road and crashed into palm trees, he said.

The crash seriously injured the driver, who was airlifted to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, Pippin said. The passenger had non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the box truck was uninjured, according to fire rescue.

Another crash was reported in Hobe Sound at 3:25 a.m. with no roadblock or injuries reported, according to FHP.
