Fire ignites at Cottonwood recycling business

COTTONWOOD, Ala. (WDHN) — On Wednesday afternoon, a fire broke out at a recycling business in Cottonwood.

Cottonwood Recycling, a new business at the former Whitehead Milling Company.

Recycling workers had been demolishing some of the structures at the facility and while they were on lunch break, a fully engulfed fire ignited shortly after noon.

With the windy conditions, the fire extended into a house next to the facility.

“It’s actually a part of the firefighter place and they put it out by hand and with the wind blowing we had extensions to stop the fire and it’s a house that houses the workers,” says Cottonwood Public Safety Director Colonel Jim Smith.

It took firefighters about ten minutes to put the fire out with the breezy conditions but there were no injuries.
