Fire in loading dock of Olympia HomeGoods sets off alarms, cause under investigation

The Olympia Fire Department responded to a fire alarm activation at 1200 Cooper Point Rd. SW, in the back of HomeGoods. When crews arrived just before 12:30 a.m. Nov. 3, they found a docked semi trailer on fire.

Assistant Chief Kevin Bossard said a truck wasn’t attached to the trailer, but the trailer was fully loaded. It created such a significant source of fire and heat that it pushed smoke into the building, causing the detectors to go off. Bossard said sprinklers never went off, and the fire stayed put to the trailer.

Bossard said 11 units and around 30 firefighters responded to the fire, and it was difficult to put out due to how full the trailer was. He said there was no evidence the fire started from the inside or caused by any materials that were loaded into the trailer.

He said eventually the Public Works Department assisted with an excavator. They peeled away some sides of the trailer and pulled apart debris so firefighters could access and put out the fire more easily. Crews worked until 4:30 a.m. to extinguish the fire.

Bossard said there were no injuries reported, but the building took on some smoke damage. The OFD was also assisted by Lacey Fire District 3, the Tumwater Fire Union and McLane Black Lake Fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
