Firefighters battle salvage yard fire in Fort Smith Wednesday
Firefighters battled a blaze at a Fort Smith salvage yard Wednesday afternoon in scorching heat.
About 3:15 p.m., flames shot high into the air at the Yaffe Iron and Metal salvage yard in the 700 block of Wheeler Avenue.
A Fort Smith Fire Department crew with a ladder and hose fought the fire beginning at about 3:35 p.m., according to Brandon Chase Goldsmith, who videotaped the fire and crews putting it out.
The heat index Wednesday afternoon was about 107 degrees, with a high temperature of about 98 degrees.
Details about the fire were not immediately available, but the fire was under control by 3:50 p.m., a city spokesman said.
