The first image from Johnny Depp's upcoming film The Lone Ranger, co-starring Armie Hammer (The Social Network), was released by the film studio Disney Pictures March 8, offering an idea of the stylized look of this interpretation.

A redo of the 1950s and '60s television series and radio show in the 1930s tells the story of a lawman in the West who wears a mask, like a superhero, and fights crime with his partner, a Native American.

Depp plays Tonto, described in this version of the adventure as "a spirit warrior on a personal quest." The Lone Ranger is portrayed by Hammer.

The film also stars Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter) and Tom Wilkinson (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) and is directed by Gore Verbinski, who worked with Depp on the Oscar winner for animated film Rango and the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Depp will next be seen in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows as vampire Barnabas Collins, also inspired by a 1960s television series. The gothic thriller will be released on May 11.

The Lone Ranger is slated to open May 31, 2013.
