Nokia’s yet-to-be-released Lumia 920 has gotten a ton of hype for its PureView camera. So does it live up to expectations?
We recently got our hands on the smartphone and hit the streets of San Francisco with it for the San Francisco Giants World Series Championship parade, snapping shots of the colorful floats as they passed by.

Almost every photo we took with the Nokia 920 was in focus, despite our often awkward shooting angles and minimal focus time. Much like other smartphone cameras, tapping on the screen will bring your subject into focus. With the 920, however, the camera will take a picture as soon as it achieves that focus, so you don't end up in situations where you focus on a shot only to loose that focus before you're able to hit the shutter button.
Photos we took with the camera, however, by in large seemed darker and had less contrast than some of the same photos taken with other phones in the office: a Galaxy S III and an iPhone 4S.
We used the default camera app and default camera settings on all three smartphones, and took photos while holding the phones in the parade crowd, just like you might had done you been taking photos as a spectator at the same event.
To help show some of the differences we combined the shots from all three cameras below.
Photos were taken directly off the cameras and put into this post, with no photo editing besides the cropping required to fit them side-by-side. If you want to get a closer look, each set of images can be viewed larger by clicking on it.
We will be doing a more controlled real-world test with the Lumia 920, iPhone 5, and other cameras in the coming weeks, but here's a preliminary look at how the photos from the three cameras we had on hand stacked up:

All three cameras did an Instagram-worthy job of snapping pictures of the parade. By in large, the Galaxy S III took photos that were closer to real life, however, it also took more photos that were blurry and out of focus than the other two. The iPhone 4S produced better detail than the other two cameras, but also seemed to boost the color in several photos compensating perhaps for the overcast day, which made the photos look great, but also a little less true to life.
Look for a more detailed and controlled real-world test of the Lumia 920, iPhone 5, Galaxy S III and others in the coming weeks with different lighting and scene scenarios.
