Open the box and start looking around. There are retirement options for every budget, you just need to know where to look. In 2011 my husband and I sold and or gave away all of our worldly possessions and packed our bags. Keep reading, because right now you are thinking I am off my rocker. In reality, I am sitting in a rocking chair enjoying the cool breeze off the lake as my husband sleeps in a hammock.
How did we afford to retire? We looked outside the box, actually we looked out of the country. With car insurance, cell phone contracts, bills lining the mailbox it was time to make a break. We sold everything we had, knickknacks, furniture, the car and even our house. We bought airline tickets and packed our bags.
We are not the only people that have discovered life outside the United States. Central America has many options, our favorite being Nicaragua. Here, the cost of living is peanuts compared to back home. Beer is a dollar, lunch is two dollars, and you can have your house cleaned for less then dinner at McDonalds. There is no need for health insurance as doctors and dentists are easy to find and office visits are less then your co-pay back home.
Everything you could want is at your doorstep, with fresh local fruit in the market and hard to find imports at the larger stores. There is an abundance of reasonably priced real estate, just know what you are looking for and don't buy bigger then your budget. If you are not sure what you want, try renting for several months. This will give you the chance to see if you are truly happy with your decision before you have invested.
Moving to a foreign country can be scary, but the one place that won't be scared is the wallet. Look at your budget, and start eliminating things that are currently pushing retirement further away and see which of those things you can live without. Add a tropical destination with over 300 days of sunshine and reconsider, retirement doesn't have to be just a dream, open your mind to creativity and places such as Nicaragua, you may find anything is doable.
