First Person: Thanksgiving, Together, After 20 Years

The Story Behind the Thanksgiving Photo

Every photo has a story, and on this Thanksgiving, Yahoo! News asked readers to share one photo, and the story behind it, that holds meaning for them. Here's one.

FIRST PERSON | In 2011, my grandmother passed away. We came together to have her memorial and have a Thanksgiving dinner as a whole family.

This photo of my father, Steve, and my Aunt Lauren touched my heart. We haven't been together in more than 20 years as a group. Seeing my family here to remember my Grandma Laura and to celebrate the coming of my first grandchild was a bittersweet day, indeed. We were at a hotel in Lake Chelan, Wash. My aunt is giving comfort to her older brother as he sits.

It brought back memories of childhood and how we would all get together to celebrate Thanksgiving: everyone bringing their favorite dishes and my grandparents hosting us in their modest home. I found it sad that it took the passing of a loved one to bring a family that was once so close back together again. It was also heartwarming to see the love and compassion that this brother and sister have for each other, even though the distance between them is far.

I hope that my own children will always show the same love for each other. It made me understand how important family is, no matter the distance.
