Fisker CEO revamps business plan amid Karma woes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fisker Automotive, a maker of plug-in hybrid sports cars, may build its second model outside of the United States if federal funds intended to pay for the vehicle's production fall through, the company's chief executive said on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Energy froze a $529 million loan awarded to Fisker in 2009 as part of an Obama administration program to spur advanced vehicle development.

The bulk of that loan was slated to help Fisker build the new model, called the Atlantic, at a former General Motors Co factory in Wilmington, Delaware.

"We're going to launch this car with or without the DOE," said Chief Executive Tom LaSorda during a media event ahead of the New York auto show. "We're proceeding where the best cost will be. We're looking for alternative options to the U.S., of course."

LaSorda said Fisker would make a decision on where to build the Atlantic by the end of the summer, when production of the model was initially expected to begin. That will now be pushed back.

LaSorda and other Fisker executives, including founder Henrik Fisker, were in New York to showcase a concept version of the Atlantic, previously known as Project NINA.

Fisker is still renegotiating the terms of the DOE loan. It is also is seeking private financing and considering a high-yield debt deal. LaSorda added that Fisker was also interested in strategic partnerships.

The Delaware plant, which can build up to 100,000 cars, is still the "primary" choice, but where the Atlantic is built depends in part on who invests in the company, LaSorda said.

"One thing we need is investments," said LaSorda, a former chief executive of Chrysler Group LLC , said.

"There's a lot of interested parties outside the U.S. The investment will certainly influence us in where we might go," he said, without elaborating.

    RESTORING CREDIBILITY

The Atlantic is key to helping Fisker regain its credibility after a series of setbacks with its flagship sports car, the Karma. The Atlantic will cost about half of the Karma, which carries a price tag of more than $100,000.

"This is their first high-volume model," said AutoPacific analyst Dave Sullivan. "They need to have a flawless launch because that's how they're going to end up paying the bills."

"They are struggling right now to gain credibility as a manufacturer," he said.

The DOE froze its loan to Fisker because of a one-year delay in the bringing the Karma to showrooms. The move forced Fisker to suspend work at the Delaware factory and lay off 26 workers in February.

Then in March, a Karma being tested by Consumer Reports failed because of a defect in the battery packs made by supplier A123 Systems Inc .

The battery packs are now being replaced at A123's cost. LaSorda told reporters it was considering a number of battery suppliers for the Atlantic, including A123.

Should the Atlantic not be built in Delaware, Fisker may build vehicles off of a another, smaller platform that the company is working on now.

Under LaSorda, Fisker has devised a business plan that allows Fisker to be profitable without the DOE loans.

So far, Fisker has raised more than $1 billion in private financing and LaSorda has also personally invested in the company. Fisker has used $193 million of its DOE loan and has not received a payment from the agency since last May.

Fisker recently raised $392 million in private financing, according to a Fisker regulatory filing this week. It hopes to raise $500 million.

The car maker was founded in 2007 by Henrik Fisker, a one-time Aston Martin designer who was until recently its chief executive. In February, Fisker named LaSorda as the new CEO to manage Fisker's business strategy.

The Karma has benefited from the support of celebrities such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio and pop icon Justin Bieber, who received the car for his birthday this year.

Well said, LaSorda. Join the rest of us who moved our businesses offshore.

You'll eventually run out of productive people to sponge off of, William. In the meanwhile, we can still vote, so look out.

Just ask President Obama to give you more tax dollars to support a Norway auto manufacturing scam for the wealthy? This Liberal Administration is a joke!

Let's see, Obama gave them a $540 million to build cars in Finland. I guess Obama must be having trouble selling some US debt because he is behind on about $300 million in loan payments. So, now Fisker will have to bet it's future on an affordable semi electric car made who know where and costing a mere $50K. I am sure people will flock to the buy them.

Where are those American jobs? Everywhere but America thanks to Obama and buddy Jeff Inmelt at GE!

Federal funds (our tax dollars) certainly need to fall through. Obama has WASTED billions of our money on his idiotic dreams. If these projects can't support themselves they are not viable.

What's going on here, the Fisker costs over $100,000. This is one of Obama's little Green project investments but it only applies to the 1% that he is against as a Socialist, unless it is convenient or it's him and his elitist friends. Standard Socialist hypocrisy, they hate America but are happy to remain here and enjoy all the benefits that Capitalism provides. This is the only car that Car & Driver magazine went to test that died before the test began (on the warm up track the $100,000 car died and could not be revived by the engineers from Fisker). Another in the long list of Obama FAILURES, we are running out of paper to chronicle all of them!

I still don't understand how Fiskar got the loan in the first place. It seems the extent of their business plan was to use the magic word--green--then ask for and receive over half a billion dollars. Only after millions of our tax dollars were wasted because it turns out the factory couldn't be built in the U.S. did anyone think to ask if Fiskar had a plan. Why did no one ask beforehand what strategy for building cars no one wants?

Yeah, the woes are no one is gonna spend 100,000 dollars for a car. Another towel is thrown in, another nail in the coffin. Not only are these hybrid vehicles nearly twice as expensive as normal trucks, they’re bogged down by the weight of the battery. GM’s own Chevy Volt has been such a dissappointment. It’s desperate for sales. They only sold a little over 300 in January and no more than 280 in February and the car has been on sale since winter 2010. GM had announced it would build 100,000 in the first two years. As of February 2012 only 9600+ have been sold. Kelley Blue Book projected the 2011 Chevrolet Volt resale value at just over US$17,000 after 36 months. Consumer Reports commented that their own analysis show that many Chevrolets lose about half of their purchase price after three years of ownership, and if the Volt depreciates the same, US$17,000 seems a reasonable estimate. New York city has announced it would buy 75 vehicles for the city government’s fleet. I can just imagine how many will be gobbled up by state and federal agencies to replace it’s fleet of Crown Victoria’s. Nissans Leaf has had it’s production reduced, from 50,000 to 40,000 and then to 20,000 (partly blamed on the Earthquake). The subsidies are 7,500 dollars, with Obama attempting to pass 10,000 dollars. It’s like a poker player with only a pair of deuces, he throws a whole lot of chips in the pot trying to trick everybody to fold and when they do not fold the player just throws more money in. The Leaf’s sales are just as terrible, even as a true electric vehicle it costs less to produce for Nissan as the Volt does for GM because GM incorporates two power plants an engine and a battery. It tells us the market is just rejecting these vehicles. Of course the President’s economic advisor is Jeffrey Immelt who is the CEO of General Electric, which has commited to buying nearly 10,000 of these vehicles. Telling GE employees if they’re gonna buy a car for company business, buy this one to qualify for the tax credit and get reimbursment “Buy a Volt, but only a Volt”. This is invisible arm twisting by federal corporatism. The market for these vehicles is saturated. It’s just once again government picking and choosing energy options for people. Even outside the U.S., Australian solar firm Silex has declared bankruptcy. After Solyndra, Evergreen and don’t forget Q-Cells Corp which at it’s peak traded stocks at a peak of over 97 dollars per share was trading at a mere 55 cents per share in January and as of March 29th at 22.6 cents per share. And there are reports that another major solar producer is gonna go belly up.

Al Gore strikes again. I wonder how much of the half billion in tax money he will stuff in his pockets when the company goes out of business. Hell, he has probably already taken it.

Take it elsewhere. Take OUR money to produce it and charge us a $100,000.00 for the car. Another retarded Obama move
