Fisker recalls Karma electric car at risk for fire

WASHINGTON (AP) — Even expensive electric cars get recalled sometimes.

Fisker Automotive is recalling its 2012 Karma because of a potential coolant leak.

The plug-in hybrid cars cost about $100,000. Fisker has sold about 50 of them and says 1,200 more are in production or waiting to be sold.

Improperly installed hose clamps in the car's battery pack could cause coolant to leak, which could start a fire. Fisker says no incidents have been reported by customers or retailers.

The company says it will replace the battery pack.

Fisker was founded in 2007 and is privately held. It's based in Irvine, Calif.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating a fire in the battery of a Chevrolet Volt that may have been caused by a coolant leak.

He got over $500 million to supposedly build these cars in the US,and instead has the cars built under contract in Finland, presumably with help from their government as well. He did this citing problems with the quality of US workers, so now poor construction is catching up, boo hoo! Will the cars have to be shipped back to Finland to be repaired, as obviously Americans are unfit to build or repair them!
I hope the government catches and imprisons this fraud!

So if you crash one in a river or drive through a flooded area you're gonna blow.Give me the diesel VW.At 50 Miles per Gallon and no battery pack to replace at a cost of 10k,it's a no brainer.

And you've crashed your car in the river or driven through a flooded area how many times?

The Energy Department issued a $529 million loan to Fisker in April 2010 for the development of its plug-in electric vehicles.

The administration has come under fire for issuing the loan after ABC News reported in October that Fisker is making its vehicles in Finland because it could not find a contractor in America to manufacture them.
But the Energy Department has countered that the loan was intended to help Fisker develop the vehicles, which the company did in the United States.

The Energy Department said in October that the loan was used to develop manufacturing processes for the Karma, at the company’s U.S. facilities.

The department also said the larger portion of the loan — $359 million — was supporting production of Fisker’s Nina vehicles, and that Fisker used this funding to bring a shuttered General Motors plant in Delaware back to life. That plant employs 2,500 people, according to the Energy Department.

The news comes after Republicans have pummeled the Obama administration for issuing a $535 million loan guarantee in 2009 to the now-bankrupt California solar panel manufacturer Solyndra

Yeah, well how much You want to bet the "Nina" never rolls and that GM plant stays shuttered. If Fisker had such a good and saleable idea,I'm sure he could have found investors to back him. I guess he didn't,so the people of the US had to get screwed instead, just like with Solyndra. Oh,and the bush administration had previously refused the money for solyndra, calling them a bad risk. It just so happened that one of their investors contributed a large sun to Obama's campaign and then suddenly this bad idea was the (now failed)future of energy in the world. I wonder how much of our cash was skimmed off before they failed?

I still would take one. At about $40k. I would still need to get a loan for it, too.

The govt.should not be in the business of giving loans with our money anyway.Like someone said earlier,if it is a profitable business there will be private investors.

I don't believe Big Oil is too worried about the few electric cars and hybrids we see mostly driven by the rich or Hollywood elite.I guess it makes them feel they are "doing their part"in the energy crisis.

Could it be big oil or the big 3 trying to kill it as they did the Tucker in 48 ????
