Anyone who has ever been ice fishing will realize the importance of wearing warm clothes. However, not just any winter apparel will do; it's best to get waterproof gear that is made specifically for ice fishing.
Luckily, there are plenty of options when shopping for ice fishing clothes, and I'd suggest getting the following five items before heading out on the lake:
StrikeMaster HardWater Ware™ Polar Bibs ($139.99 - $149.99)
These look like overalls but are much more protective against the winter elements. Most importantly, they are wind and waterproof and will keep you warm when you want to go out on frigid days. One nice feature are the knee pads with extra padding, which are sure to come in handy during a long period of ice fishing. These bibs are also comfortable and secure with Velcro and adjustable straps. Finally, the four pockets give lots of space to keep other gear and supplies.
When ice fishing, I think there may be no article of clothing more important than the gloves. That's because you're sure to encounter icy water and generally cold temperatures, so you better find some quality gloves that are waterproof. These Clam ones will certainly do the trick, as they have a good insulation and Oxford shell. Additionally, these gloves will work well for other winter sports.
Just as having cold fingers can ruin a day of ice fishing, so can having cold toes and feet. So to protect your feet against the inevitable splashes of water, try getting these socks. They are made of a comfortable and warming mix of 85 percent wool, 10 percent polyester, and 5 percent spandex. But more important, they are moisture wicking to keep your feet dry.
Ice Armor Fleece Lined Wind Pants ($49.99)
Any experienced ice fisher knows that wearing jeans or other non-athletic pants is a mistake. Instead, I'd wear these Ice Armor wind pants, which will protect your legs against water and ice. They will also keep you toasty with a comfortable fleece lining. For storing equipment, they have two hand front pockets and a Velcro rear pocket.
Ice Armor Trapper Hat ($19.99)
While any warm hat will suffice, if you want to look the part of an ice fisher you should get this hat. One advantage is a sun visor for protection against ice glare, and that's something other winter hats don't provide. And when it's very cold, you'll appreciate the fleece ear flaps. In addition, this hat is good to wear in any type of cold weather.
