Five Police Officers Across the Country Fatally Shot Over a Two-Day Period

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, five police officers across the United States were fatally shot.

On Wednesday, two Maryland sheriff's deputies – Mark Logsdon and Patrick Dailey – died after being shot at a restaurant. Also that day, Deputy Sheriff Derek Geer of the Mesa County, Colorado, sheriff's department killed while pursuing a suspect, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

One day later, Police Officer Jason Maszer of the Fargo, North Dakota, police department was killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call, Major Greg Barney of the Riverdale, Georgia, police department was killed while serving a warrant.

The shootings more than double the number of officers killed by gunfire this year, CNN reports.

The two Maryland deputies were responding to a call at a Panera Bread restaurant on Wednesday. One of the officers sat down next to the suspect, who immediately pulled out a handgun and shot the deputy, police say.

The other deputy confronted the suspect in the parking lot of the restaurant, only to be fatally shot.

The North Dakota shooting of Officer Maszer shook the town of Fargo, which hasn't seen the death of an officer in more than a century, the Associated Press reports. Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney said the city was "profoundly saddened" by the death of the decorated police officer.

Major Barney, in Georgia, was serving a no-knock drug warrant with other officers when he was shot, the AP reports. He was a 25-year veteran of the Riverdale Police Department.

Deputy Sheriff Geer was shot several times after responding to a call of a man with a gun, according to the NLEOMF. The suspect fled and Geer after Geer deployed his taser.

Prior to these shooting deaths, three other were reported by the NLEOMF this year.

So far, 11 officers have been killed in the line of duty this year, which is actually down from the 13 officers killed before February 12 last year.
