Five reasons US must avoid war with Iran

Do the drumbeaters calling for ‘war with Iran’ never learn from history? It is tempting to dismiss their hot air as an attempt to score political points, but its sheer volume is worrying. Two former US hostages in Iran say Obama must ignore the war talk, and keep in mind these five key points.

The Iranians are claiming they recently disabled an American drone aircraft. If they did so, Americans should find out how, and apply their techniques to deal with those closer to home who drone on about the “Iranian threat,” beat the war drums by suggesting military strikes and regime change, and risk dragging this country into a new military calamity in the Middle East.

Do these droners and drumbeaters never learn from history? Would they have the United States enter a new catastrophe just as we are extricating ourselves – with great difficulty – from two bloody, costly, and unproductive misadventures in Iran’s neighborhood?

To all appearances American drumbeaters are no smarter than Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, who, in 1980, thought that a weakened and divided Iran would fall easily to his better-armed and better-organized forces. Instead his attack united Iranians – even those who detested the prevailing holy fascism – behind defending the homeland. In that sense, Hussein also helped the authorities in Tehran to suppress all domestic dissent and consolidate power under the most authoritarian and intolerant of ideologies.

RELATED: Six ways to improve US relations in the new Middle East

Just because a war with Iran is foolish, however, does not mean it will not happen. Several discredited former American officials such as former ambassador to the UN John Bolton and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are essentially calling for one. While it is tempting to dismiss the current rhetoric as hot air intended to score political points, its sheer volume and frequency is worrying. Nine years ago, in the case of Iraq, a similar flood of rhetoric, fear mongering, and distortion overwhelmed good judgment, and led America on a course that defied common sense. It could happen again, this time in a way that could make Iraq look easy.

US officials – particularly the president – who have the difficult task of dealing with Iran should ignore the recent cacophony of war talk, and keep in mind the following:

    • Iran is chiefly a threat to itself. Its diplomacy has been inept, featuring charm offensives alternating with making gratuitous enemies. It has few friends in its region, beyond tiny, Christian Armenia. Unlike most of its neighbors, it is not Arab, Turkish, or Sunni Muslim, and thus lacks a ready entree into regional affairs. Its support of President Bashir al-Assad’s regime in Syria, while understandable from a strategic point of view, has won it few friends in the region.

    • The priority of those in power in Tehran is their own political survival. When that is at stake, they can become remarkably flexible (or brutal). As a former Iranian official once put it, regarding the Iran-Iraq war: They don’t care how many young people die in the Iraqi swamps. But they are not going to commit political suicide.

    • The Islamic Republic wants the US to over-react to its posturing. Provoking us to do and say something stupid is the national sport. Iranian bellicose statements about closing the Strait of Hormuz and the recent officially sanctioned attack on the British Embassy are signs of weakness, not strength. America and its allies should not swallow the bait. The best response to Iranian bravado and claims of this or that achievement is a collective yawn.

OPINION: War with Iran? Consult history.

    • The Iranians may or may not be working toward a nuclear weapon. We should make a cold calculation, however, about just what such a weapon will do for them. It certainly does not solve their economic problems, nor does it silence opposition protesters in Tehran or ethnic separatists in Baluchestan, Kordestan, or elsewhere. Nor does a nuclear weapon help the Islamic Republic counter what it claims is the main threat to its survival: a covert war of “soft overthrow” waged by its traditional enemies in the West.

    • America should not paint itself into a rhetorical corner. American presidents have said that a nuclear-armed Iran is “unacceptable”. So, presumably, is a nuclear-armed Pakistan, India, or North Korea. The Berlin wall was also unacceptable. In all these cases, however, Americans remained smart and did not become captive to their own rhetoric.

For 30 years, America’s dealings with Iran have been difficult and frustrating. Attempts to break the existing downward spiral of insults, accusations, and threats have foundered on mistrust and sometimes on just bad timing. When President Obama – at the beginning of his administration – offered Iran engagement based on mutual respect (something the Iranians have always claimed they wanted), Tehran seemed unwilling or unable to respond.

In May 2010, when Iran seemed ready to accept the same nuclear fuel deal it had rejected seven months earlier, the process of building consensus for a UN Security Council sanctions resolution had become irreversible.

Despite setbacks, the US should not give up on the effort to end over three decades of futility with Iran. Otherwise Americans risk stumbling into another armed conflict with unpredictable and disastrous consequences. Americans should keep their heads on their shoulders and apply the classic tools of statecraft: patience, firmness, persistence, open-mindedness, and a readiness to listen.

RELATED: Q&A: What's with the war talk surrounding Iran?

Above all Americans must keep their poise, and ignore the droners – even the loudest ones – who would stampede their country into yet another Middle East fiasco.

    L. Bruce Laingen was chief of mission and John Limbert was political officer at the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979. Both were detained in Iran for 14 months.

Examine what has happened to empires throughout history-Roman, Spanish, Turkish, Soviet- they collapsed through economic exhaustion. Military affairs cost a lot of money and can ruin an economy not build it up. Only a select few actually profit from war and the our "leaders" in Washington should set new priorities and goals. There are far better ways to deal with Iran as this article points out.

Social programs cost two to three times more than defense, and have not helped us in any way.
      • KATHLEEN 4 mths ago
John, the recent wars haven't helped us one bit, either
      • HowlingWolfPaw 4 mths ago
what special programs john? I am trying to figure out what we could spend that much money on!
    • GS  •  4 mths ago
Five reasons? How about just one: we cannot afford it; we should use that money to improve the situation @ home.
      • James G 4 mths ago
Spot on, although I will add that we shouldn't waste humans as well.
      • GO PACK 4 mths ago
We can't afford it? Obama just went through $ 5 trillion in less than 3 years and is asking for another $ 1.5 trillion and he isn;'t worried.
      • Cartigan 4 mths ago
        That's called "communism," apparently.

I keep seeing posts about avoiding War because of the cost. How much will it cost the United States if Iran develops nuclear weapons?
      • Ricardo 4 mths ago
They said the same thing everytime, what if N. Korea builds one, what if Russia builds one, what if England build one..and on and on and on...hell, everyone else has some...even China, Japan...in a few years, You will be able to buy one at Walmart and people will complain that Target want to sell them.

a nuclear Iran would control the price of oil by holding the strait of hormuz hostage
      • Average Joe 4 mths ago
Nothing. The cost of them developing a nuclear weapon is nothing. It has always been, and it will always be. It would change nothing, as the author states. The path to freedom is trade, economic incentive and wealth. We keep crushing that in Iran, and the people just hate us more.
    • marine1968  •  Haverhill, New Hampshire  •  4 mths ago
Most of the reasons to avoid war with Iran is can be summed up into one prime reason.......we have already spent millions of dollars and American lives in Mideast ventures that have been less than major successes....the status quo has been maintained or the opposition has gained support in those countries in which we have and still are engaging an enemy that seems to be gaining more support from the populace for whom we are providing military and economic support. We need to return to the domestic front which is less than idyllic. Let Israel handle Iran.
      • RichardZag 4 mths ago
        "millions of dollars"?? Try "trillions".
    • Wayne  •  Houston, Texas  •  4 mths ago
I think the only people who want us to go to war with Iran are the zealots in control of Iran. The average person on the street of Tehran wants nothing to do with it, as did the the average person in Berlin or Tokyo. The Republican Guard are counting on the US to fight the same way we've done in Iraq and Afghanistan, like Korea and Vietnam, with one hand tied behind our backs. We haven't "waged war" since Germany and Japan. If you consider the destruction on those two countries, caused 70 years ago, with 1940's technology, what we could do now IF we chose to would be astounding. General T.Sherman was right, "war is all hell", but when ALL OTHER options have failed, and you have no choice, you make it SO HORRIBLE, SO DESTRUCTIVE, BOTH SIDES will do anything to get it over with. Absolute annihilation is a strong incentive to get the other side to make peace.

Don't they have oil? That's why go to war these days, isn't it?
      • Alton 4 mths ago
Natch. "And the cost of the war will be paid for by the oil." Let me see now. Where did I hear that? Now, since we are drilling in the gulf again, Drilling in Russia is being done again, North Dakota is drilling, most, if not all of OPEC has suffered the Arab Spring, we are building a lot of windmills, discovered that Solar power is a at rock bottom prices now and we are muddling over the Tar sands ,which we won't see any of the oil from (not to mention Fracking and pumping water into Volcanoes to make steam), why is the price of oil STILL above $3.00 a gallon? If basically the war with Iraq is over, Afghanistan is winding down, then why is it still so high?

Everyone that says we should go start a possible world war 3 should pack their bags and join the military. Put yourself on the line. It's easy to sit behind a computer and put another's safety and America on the line for stupidity.

Dear writer, editor, thank you for this breath of fresh air article. congratulations on getting a lightbulb shining in an otherwise dark room. i feel the real threats to the u.s and iranian people are internal and have been for a long time. many of the comments, not all, here illustrate my point better than i possibly could. keep up the good work.

Iran's regime wants a war with us, they are in a lose-lose situation. To the Iranian regime, the prospects of fighting a politically unpopular American invasion is less of a threat than an Arab-spring like uprising. So Iran gets a war with America, fights it, unites its people, and then America retreats as the American people do not have an appetite for a 3rd war in less than a decade.
    • The Delhi Llaama  •  Houston, Texas  •  4 mths ago
On the contrary......the article deals with Iran from a very logical point of view, that said it misses the point entirely. Irans current Theistic regieme does not operate from a logical viewpoint. Its Sheite philosophy is anathema to the Sunni point of view and therefore considered as little more than harlots by the Sunni. They have something to prove to themselves as well as to the rest of the world and that is the demanding of respect. This respect they will never obtain, because respect must always be earned......not demanded.
    • Dick Dong  •  4 mths ago
this article was so frigging dumb, with holes in its 'logic' big enough to fit a nuclear missile, i'm wondering if these 2 libs are actually trying reverse "psycho-ology" and want us to go to war...
    • Dick Dong  •  4 mths ago
The previous article was brought to you by The Ayatoilets of I RAN... Mary Baker Eddy must be rolling in her grave... These "geniuses" know Iran so well they were only held hostage for 14 mos., under Carter. THAT'S what appeasement gets you. That and brainwashing. I don't remember Iran even breathing in our direction when the "discredited" John Bolton and Newt Gingrich were at their posts, never mind building nuclear weapons and baiting us to fight. Gee, I wonder why? Yes, iran's best friend, appeasement. But let's wait till they finish developing nuclear weapons. Shouldn't be long now that their man in the white house has bought them a year of kinda, sorta, not quite an "embargo" amount of time. After all, they don't have anything to lose. We do. If I were against war with iran, I'm not now. Thanks for convincing me.

war with Iran is foolish but bombing all the nuke sites is not!

Can't afford it. can't afford it, can't afford it, can't afford it and can't afford it.
    • jamie  •  Nashville, Tennessee  •  4 mths ago
I agree war should be the last resort but if we are gonna hurt them with sanctions then hit all there world bank accounts and put embargos on there oil. Tell the world if they want there oil then help us put pressure on them to open there nuclear program to round the clock monitoring or we will bomb the program back a few years. They threatened to close the straight ......hell lets close it. We could take out there navy in under a week. whats easier making there economy so bad that the people rise up and revolt or going to war. Washington needs to take notice because America is the greatest country in the world and we the people can rise up too.

Keep the Hormuz straight open and there will be no war.
Close it and the whole world will change.

Great article! Who are these folks that want another war? What for?
    • Ali Harbers  •  Jakarta, Indonesia  •  4 mths ago
There are additional reasons : - US as a great nations which always claims and respects human rights, equality of rights as sovereign country, justice for all and democracy must reconsiders over and over before deciding to attack Iran unless US disregard what it keep saying to entire world.- Attacking a sovereign country is against the UN Charter, which the International world often watched US/West disrespected the essence of this Charter, but most of UN members could not do anything or they did not want/ were afraid of being considered foes. It is high time all Nations leaders stop even thinking of using war as a means of finding solution to the disagreement/conflict, because war only creates human disaster mainly the innocent ones who don't know anything about.
