Fla. Governor to hold conference call on ports

Fla. Gov. Rick Scott to hold conference call on possible nationwide port strike

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Rick Scott will hold a conference call with executives from Florida's ports to discuss how a possible strike would affect the state.

The conference call is planned for Thursday morning and will include port leaders from Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, Manatee County, Palm Beach and Port Canaveral.

These ports could be affected if talks between shipping companies and the dockworkers union break down. A contract between the two groups expires on Dec. 29. Negotiations are ongoing between the International Longshoremen's Association and the United States Maritime Alliance.

On Dec. 21, Scott sent a letter to President Obama, asking him to invoke the Taft-Hartley Act to prevent a possible work stoppage.
