VIENNA (AP) — A flash flood unleashed by heavy rains has trapped 27 hikers in a cave in western Austria, but rescue workers say they are not in danger.
The rescue officials say the hikers were cut off from the outside world early Wednesday when water flooded the entrance to the cave at St. Martin, about 320 kilometers (200 miles) west of Vienna.
One rescue official, Gernot Salzmann, said emergency crews are in voice contact with those trapped inside. He said the hikers will be taken out once the waters recede — but there was no immediate word on when that would happen.
