Flexible Keyboard Overlay Turns Your iPad Into a Laptop [VIDEO]

Anyone who has ever tried to type on an iPad can understand why TouchFire -- a simple keyboard overlay that makes typing easier -- has raised almost $100,000 on Kickstarter.

Instead of inserting a string of babble into your prose as usually happens when you rest your fingers on the iPad's keyboard, TouchFire doesn't set off a single key when you rest you fingertips on the product. Its defined keys make typing while looking away from the screen possible, and its silicon body is an improbably thin and flexible solution to a problem that is usually solved with clunky plastic add-ons.

[More from Mashable: Carrier IQ and Your Phone: Everything You Need to Know]

"Everyone else, when they think about a keyboard," says TouichFire co-founder Steven Isaac, "they try to replicate what a mechanical keyboard is."

Isaac doesn't come from a mechanical engineering background. He worked on an operating system for one of the first tablet-like devices in the late 80s and early 90s, helped develop Internet Explorer 1.0 and led the team that launched MSN.com. But he was inspired to build his first piece of hardware when the iPad came out.

[More from Mashable: Largest-Ever Apple Store to Open in NYC Next Week]

"I thought, this is everything we dreamed of 20 years ago [when working on the tablet], but the input still sucks," he says.

He recruited his co-founder, Brad Melmon, to help make the keyboard more than twice as thin as a credit card and easily rollable to the side of the iPad when not in use. Magnets on the keyboard's sides snap it into place to type and snap it to the iPad case for storage.

The secret patent-pending sauce is a group of small microstructures in each key that allow fingers to rest on them at any angle without touching the iPad. When the device does finally go to market (as of now, an undefined date), Isaac expects it to retail for about $45.

Not so bad for a prototype that had its first of 49 iterations created in a garage with an exacto knife.

"This really was just two guys in a garage," Isaac says. "And who knows, it could end up changing the world."

In the video above, Isaac demonstrates the silicon iPad keyboard at Mashable's offices in New York.

As per usual, no picture to go with the article. Great job, Yahoo. Thanks.

Don't blame Yahoo, it's not their article. Blame Mashable, whatever that is.

Why not just buy a laptop...sheesh
      • BoneZ 5 mths ago
because tablets are more versatile. I thought this was common knowledge?

Um, no it doesn't! Can you plug in a usb device? Can you set it on your lap and not hunch over to see the screen? Can it play dvds, cds?

you don;t need a dvd or a cd. it is a full media player. You can get almost everything you want from iTunes.

First off, laptops are a PITA to actually sit and READ a book on. The idea of an iPad is much more flexibility. You can read books on it, magazines, you can surf the web, listen to music, etc. A laptop has much more bulk and not as easy to cart around. Besides, MOST people that have an iPad also already have a laptop, but use the iPad when they're out and about, or for reading, etc. But having the ability to type easier if you should need to do so; say you are out at Starbucks reading, and the office contacts you and needs you to compose an e-mail to a client or update a document, etc. Instead of having to spend so much time pecking on the iPad's native keyboard, you can use the overlay and quickly whip out what they requested. As far as people complaining about memory space on the iPad, that is what iCloud is for- storing documents and other things off your device but still easily accessible (as long as you have a WiFi connection).
To me, it sounds like most of those making negative comments don't understand the updated technology. How often do people actually use a CD or DVD anymore- there is a reason why everything is going to streaming. This 'overlay' is just another advancement in "detached" technology- which is the way the world is going. Like it or not, it is the wave of the future.

Pretty soon they will add a 5.25 external floppy drive that attaches to the back of it

I wouldn't have an Ipad. A friend of mine owns one and he can't even plug his Ipod into it. In fact, the only thing that plugs into it is the charger. Apple can keep the ridiculous things as far as I'm concerned.
      • Scott 5 mths ago
why would you want to plug an iPod into an iPad? that just does not make sense.
      • yippee 5 mths ago
lol Scott. Jim, you are seriously misinformed about what you think you do not know, and that which you do know. Sounds to me like you have never picked up an iPad, if all you know is that a charger is the only thing which will plug into an iPad. As for your friend, he sounds like someone who should not be in possession of an iPad.

apple cant run everything that a pc can and pc can run everything that an apple can, apples cant run sophisicated programs used by pros, because most companies use windows as a platform

If you want a keyboard, get a laptop. There're way more powerful, and can do way more then these tablets. And you don't even have to hold a laptop to read on it.
    • Soldierone  •  5 mths ago
Lmao! Every Ipad owner (especially the ones writing for Yahoo) talk crap about laptops....then this happens. Honestly tablets just went backwards, and now they are following the footsteps of laptops so why not just get a laptop and call it a day?

Reminds me of an idea I had a long time ago. Imagine a tablet, but it had a keyboard attached to it via a hinged mechanism. It was kind of a computer, but would sit on TOP of your LAP. I know...crazy idea.
    • No Hate  •  5 mths ago
Why do people need a keyboard, we just need that chip in our brains and we're good to go.
