Flipboard for iPhone featuring Cover Stories

The iPhone application Flipboard and voIP service Skype took the top prizes in the Mobile apps categories Social (Handheld Devices) and Social (Tablet and all other Devices) at this year's Webby Awards on May 1.

The Webby Awards, now in their 16th edition, honor the best of the best on the internet including websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, mobile and apps. One winner in each of the 100 categories is awarded a Webby from the 1000-member academy, members of which include David Bowie and Richard Branson, while a People's Voice award is also attributed.

This year in the category Mobile apps iPhone app Flipboard took the top prize in Social (Handheld Devices) winning both the Webby and People's Choice Awards, while Skype took top place, also winning both awards in the category Social  (Tablet and all other Devices).

The free app Flipboard acts as a social network aggregation service, enabling users to ‘flip' through their social network feeds and content from websites in a similar manner to the way in which one would flip through a magazine.

Skype, also free, is a voIP service which enables users to make free calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world or low cost calls to mobile or landlines.

Other nominees across both categories included IntoNow, Hootsuite and GroupMe which is owned by Skype.

The Webby Awards gala, famous for its five-word speeches, will be streamed live on May 21 at http://www.webbyawards.com
