    Fluoride OK'd for San Jose drinking water

    SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Dentists and children's health advocates in California are cheering a decision to add fluoride to the drinking water of San Jose — the largest city in the nation without the cavity-fighting mineral in its water supply.

    The board of the Santa Clara Valley Water District voted Tuesday to support fluoridation for most of the county. The district provides drinking water to 1.5 million residents in several cities in Silicon Valley.

    "I'm elated," Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Marty Fenstersheib said after the 7-0 vote, reported the San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/v7KIh1). "It has been my hope that this would happen."

    Supporters say fluoridated water reduces tooth decay and benefits low-income children and the elderly who do not have regular access to dental care. Critics argue adding fluoride is too costly. They say the mineral also can have adverse health effects, including fluorosis, a dental condition caused by too much fluoride. In extreme cases, fluorosis can cause discoloration and pitting of tooth enamel.

    "When you fluoridate the water, childhood tooth decay drops 40 percent and among the elderly, tooth loss and decay drops 70 percent," said Dr. Donald Lyman, of the state Department of Public Health.

    But Maureen Jones of Citizens for Safe Drinking Water in San Jose said fluoride has nothing to do with high rates of cavities and root canals experienced by low-income children in and around San Jose.

    "The parents are uneducated," Jones said. "They are bedding down children with bottles of fruit juice and soda. That's an educational issue. It has nothing to do with fluoride."

    About 21 percent of county residents already have fluoridated water, including those living in Palo Alto, which receives water from San Francisco's Hetch Hetchy system. Nationwide, 72 percent of residents have fluoride in their drinking water.

    A combination of issues has slowed San Jose in adopting fluoridation. They include a mix of providers, wells and treated water. The municipal water system, which serves roughly 12 percent of the city's population, already contains fluoride.

    It's expected to take at least a year before the district can secure funding to add fluoride to the water. The project is expected to cost $4.4 million to $9.5 million, with annual operating expenses at $836,000.

    The board voted Tuesday to work with community groups to find funding.

      Prof. Paul Rogers of Dartmouth in 2006 called for an immediate ban on silicofluorides used in 90% of US fluoridated water. It has never been properly tested. Also 235 items of baby food now have many that exceed the daily safe amount..but then babies shouldn't be getting fluoride anyway. 41% of teens have fluorosis that says they have too much fluoride...and all because they let acid eat the enamel in their teeth. the CA. Dental Assn. says 'fluoride does not prevent cavities." Diet and brushing are the key.

        Fluoride is more toxic then Lead! What kind of SAFE amount we are talking about? It's a rat poison! ADA care more about fluoride than people. Read the numbers - they are ready to pay millions for industrial waste-product. Why they can't pay for low-income people for dentist care? Fluoride IS NOT prevent decay. Lie!!!

      Fluoride is one and the only ingredient in the box - RAT poison, check yourself. No one civil country adding toxic waist - fluoride to there public water. China stoped this. Who benefit on fluoride in America?!

      Ever wonder why toothpaste with fluoride comes with a health warning to consult a physician if you swallow more than is used to brush your teeth, but water with fluoride is safe to drink in unlimited amounts?

        Why? Because they don't care about you. Aluminum Industry have to pay $1, 40 per gallon for utilization of toxic waist - fluoride. Better to salle it to you. Just don't swallow when you brush your teeth - they don't want you to die very same moment. Side effects will kill you later, but this is not there problem. Sorry!!!

      Kind of immoral to force medication on millions of people. Not to mention fluoride in water lowers your IQ. Not only a waste of money for the county, but hazardous to everyone's health. Causes bone and brain cancer, all of the recent large-scale studies of water fluoridation have shown that there are no positive effects on reducing cavities, countries without fluoridation have shown an equal improvement in dental health as those with fluoridation. So it doesn't prevent cavities, wastes money, lowers IQ and makes people unhealthy... Why are there any supporters at all????

        So school districts mandating immunization records is immoral and forced medication? It might be viewed that way, until the first massive outbreak of the flu--or swine flu...when our children and elderlies immune system can't tolerate the virus--or illness. Lowers IQ? What studies have you been looking at? And fluoride is placed in rat poison--yes, but the quantities are large--and it was actually used because it was safer for humans/animals than what was previously used. Anything in excess can cause issues, i.e. fast food, shopping, exercising--the levels placed in our system is .5 parts per million. The CDC says that water fluoridation is one of the largest medical breakthroughs of the 20th century. I will agree with them. And oh yeah, your water systems are fluoridated in SF. How's your IQ?
