Flybrix Lets You Turn Your Legos Into a Drone

Your Legos can now take to the skies. A company called Flybrix is now selling two kits that will turn your Legos into a drone.

Both kits have most of the same drone-making parts (including a minifig), but the Basic Flybrix kit ($149) requires you to use your smartphone (Android and iOS) as a controller; the Deluxe Flybrix Kit ($189) includes a traditional two-stick remote. If you want to add on the remote later, you can purchase it as part of an $80 expansion pack.

Both kits are available now, but prices are expected to increase in the near future.

You can build the drone either with the included Lego bricks, or you can use your own. Each kit comes with eight motors and propellers, a control board, rechargeable battery, and a small assortment of Lego bricks. However, don't expect to use this kit to make your Star Destroyer air-worthy; the FlyBrix motors are all pretty tiny, and capable of lifting about 16 grams each.

While it's designed to snap together in 15 minutes, more experienced builders (and flyers) can tweak the Flybrix software through a Chrome extension, and, for example, tune the motors. The control board includes a barometer, magnetometer, SD card slot and Bluetooth, but you can also add Wi-Fi and GPS modules, if you're so inclined.

Both of Flybrix' kits are now available for a limited time at the $149/$189 price; the price is expected to climb to $169 and $229, followed by another jump to their full retail price of $189 and $249, respectively.
