Following Wii U flop, Nintendo reportedly already prepping next-gen ‘Fusion’ console
Nintendo’s Wii U home video game console isn’t exactly dead and buried yet, but at this point it’s safe to call the device a complete and utter flop. Games made for the new console are no less entertaining than they were on the original Wii, which was a massive success, but the Wii U lacks any sort of appealing innovation that might woo families and casual gamers. As a result, sales have been terrible and Nintendo slashed its 2014 outlook by 70% from 9 million units to just 2.8 million. Things may have gotten so bad that, according to one report, Nintendo is already starting to work on the Wii U’s successor.
According to a report from Nintendo News, which cites a tip from one of the blog’s “very reputable sources,” Nintendo’s next-generation video game console will be a hybrid device called the Nintendo Fusion. It will look to build on the success of Nintendo’s various portable video game consoles like the 3DS by combining a handheld console and a home console, the report claims.
Nintendo’s two-part console will apparently consist of a “Fusion DS” portable device powered by an ARMv8-A Cortex-A53 CPU and a custom Adreno 420-based AMD graphics processor, and a “Fusion Terminal” that will feature a 64-bit, 8-core IBM processor and Custom Radeon HD RX 200 graphics that deliver “2816 shaders @ 960 MHz, 4.60 TFLOP/s, Fillrates: 60.6 Gpixel/s, 170 Gtexel/s.”
It looks like Forbes may soon get its wish.
