Writer/director Paul Schrader, on a byproduct of the growth of Netflix, HBO, Showtime, Amazon Prime and other non-theatrical showcases for content that once went theatrical, and how it is impacting dark prestige product like the new film Child 44 that continues to brave the theatrical release. “An example of how much the critical perception of movies v. TV has changed,” Schrader wrote this morning in a Facebook posting. “In today’s NYT review of Child 44 A.O. Scott closes his review by saying the film was okay but would have been better as the opening episode of a limited cable series. The NYT film reviewers aren’t allowed to review nontheatrical releases and therefore most distribution companies insist on a token 4-wall NYC theater release just to get the NYT review. The situation has turned upside down.”
