Ford to recall more than 20,000 trucks and SUVs

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. is recalling more than 20,000 pickup trucks and SUVs because a defective switch can cause the turn signal, tail lights and brake lights to fail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday on its website that the recall affects certain 2004 through 2011 Ranger pickups, 2002 through 2005 Excursion SUVs, and 2002 through 2007 F-250, 350, 450 and 550 trucks.

About 20,450 trucks in the U.S. are affected, plus Ford is recalling more than 6,000 of the switches that were sent to dealers as replacement parts.

Ford says it knows of no accidents or injuries caused by the problem.

The company will notify owners and dealers will replace the switches free of charge.

The turn signal failure wouldn't cause any trouble where I live because no one seems to remember what they're used for anyway. 8 out of 10 drivers around here don't even use them.

LOL I agree! People think that turn signals are an accessory and not a required law!

bad ground wire someplace. I would look at the wires that go to the chassis to make sure they are not loose or corroded. Also check the fuses dont have a hairline crack in them makiong it make and break.

Even if you buy a domestic, most of the electronics was designed in Japan and built some place other than the US. There is no such thing as an "American" automobile.

You're right. I have a 2004 Ranger with a German engine and a French transmission. I'm not sure but I think it was assembled in Canada. I also have a Japanese car that has more American contend than the Ranger and it was assembled in Tennessee. To buy American you have to get a car with a "foreign" nameplate these days.

The big three let the foriegn car makers take over their business. They should have learned their lesson in the 70's when Toyota, Datsun, and Honda started selling large numbers. American cars have improved but it took them too long.

Now the Unions are holding back the Big Three (or is it just GM and Ford), because of the cheap laber oversees.

There once was a day that all foreign cars were considered junk, sadly that day has come and gone

I'm all for worker's rights, but the UAW is the problem there. They need to take a pay cut like the rest of the planet so we can be competitive and bring more jobs back to the US.

Stepping up and taking responsibility before there's a problem and someone gets hurt. Kudos to FORD.
      • LibturdsROFL 10 mths ago
At least you can count on American automakers to own up to their mistakes and fix them right away, unlike some imports we know *cough* toyota *cough*. Now if they'd bring their plants back to the US and the UAW would give a little on their pay and benefits, we'd really have something going here.

Ford has a long way to go before they can start boasting about anything...check the number of recalls over the past 20 years...

I think this is actually a FIRST for Ford. Doing something proactively.

Remember folks ford wa the only auto maker not needing a bailout. The ones that didi recieve a bailout are haivng recalls right and left at least ford steps up to the plate before they have a real problem.

I have a 1999 Ranger pickup and the "door ajar" light never goes off. Ford seems to have some trouble with switches.

Ford is intiating the recall on these switches on their own, they where not forced to by the Goverment. It is on Fords own Goodwill these parts are being replaced. No known accidents or injurys have been reported due to the failure of the switchs.
Sounds like a stand Up Job by an American Company, give them some credit for taking care of their customers when problem arise instead of deieing a problem or hiding it.

My 94 Ford Escort just reached 2,193,470 miles and it is STILL on its original engine and transmission. The only repair I have ever had to perform was the ignition, which gave out around 975,000 miles.

At least they made the recall. I've owned several GM vehicles in the past and I could name about 100 things that should have been recalled and never were. Now I might buy Ford, but I still lean toward Honda or Toyota.
    • the government is broken  •  10 mths ago
What about the piece of @#!$ transmissions you have in the ford escape, when are you going to recall those? when are you going to get mechanics that can diagnose the problem and also what caused the problem, instead of just having part changers that can keep the vehicle running just long enough for the warranty run out? WHEN?

My 1996 Ford 4WD PU has 125,000 hard, very hard working miles, along with thousand's of hours of idling time, on it with no real problems.... ever. I wouldn't have any other brand of truck than a Ford.

My dome light won't go out and my passenger window won't roll down-and only 40K miles. Ford has more than one switch issue....

      Stop buying overseas parts.

The F150 has been a good truck when I have owned them in the past; my current Explorer is a shameful piece of junk. It won't stay repaired. the Panther platform is very rugged old school technology refined to it's pinnacle of success. But now gone gone gone.
Longest lasting cars I have found; Honda and Toyota and old Mercedes diesel.
    • Spawntaneous  •  10 mths ago
Ford is American, every part of the product should be made by American hands, right?! Stop outsourcing jobs to international(cheaper) sources...FORD.
