Forget what you’ve read: New report says Galaxy S5 will definitely be metal

Buying a Galaxy S5 next week? Here’s how to sell your old Galaxy S4 for the most money

It will be… it won’t be… it will be… it won’t be. At this point, all we know for certain about the next-generation Galaxy S5 is that it will launch sometime in 2014 and it will run Android. The rest is still up in the air and one of the most intriguing points of contention is whether or not Samsung’s next-generation flagship phone will finally feature a metal enclosure. Can you imagine one of Samsung’s gorgeous Super AMOLED displays in a case that doesn’t feel like it came off an assembly line in a Mattel factory? We recently saw a metal frame leak that was claimed to be headed to the Galaxy S5, but recent reports stated that the S5 will be plastic while a new premium “Galaxy F” line will debut in metal sometime next year. Now, however, a new report advises us all to forget what we’ve heard because the Galaxy S5 will, in fact, be metal.

Japanese-language industry monitor EMS One on Monday reported that the case on the upcoming Galaxy S5 will be a unibody metal design unlike anything we’ve seen on Samsung’s Android smartphones to date. According to the report, Taiwan-based parts supplier Catcher will begin shipping metal casings for the Galaxy S5 to Samsung later this month. Catcher has been tasked with supplying somewhere between 10 million and 30 million metal S5 cases, the report claimed, while China’s BYD and Taiwan’s Ju Teng will supply the remaining units.

Earlier reports have suggested that the Galaxy S5 is shaping up to be an absolute monster. The hero phone will reportedly feature Samsung’s new 64-bit eight-core Exynos processor, a 16-megapixel camera that touts exciting new technology, 3GB of RAM, a 4,000 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat. While one report claimed that the phone might be unveiled as soon as next month, others expect the handset to debut sometime later in the first quarter or early in the second quarter next year.
