A Pro-Active, Grassroots Effort to Enhance Job Creation by Celebrating and Equipping the Job Creator

America’s Secret Weapon
Mr. Scarborough, one of the co-founders of the Institute, stated, “Today there are millions of individuals seeking employment who have nearly given up hope for finding a quality job. We have thousands of politicians and pundits discussing this problem. They are well-intentioned but most of these people have never created a single job and have no idea what the process requires.”
Government focus has been on large businesses while it is the smaller firms that warrant our attention today. According to information distributed by the Institute and attributed to the Small Business Administration, small businesses:
- Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms.
- Employ just over half of all private sector employees.
- Have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years.
- Pay 44 percent of total U.S. private payroll.
- Create more than half of the nonfarm private gross domestic product (GDP)
- Hire 40 percent of high tech workers (such as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers).
- Made up 97.3 percent of all identified exporters and produced 30.2 percent of the known export value in FY 2007.
- Produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms; these patents are twice as likely as large firm patents to be among the one percent most cited.
Mr. Scarborough continued, “We live in the best economic system and the best time in history for the creation of jobs and opportunities for individuals. It is essential that we collectively focus on the issue of job creation and ensure that everyone is benefitting from these opportunities. That will be the ongoing work of the Institute.”
The Institute’s website lists three primary initiatives for the work of the organization. These include:
- Celebrating the Job Creator. Raising the visibility of the individuals who are on the front lines of our economy starting, building, and running companies that create the jobs that drive the American economic engine. The Institute will provide specific and concrete tools to recognize and celebrate this contribution with press releases, certificates, identifying buttons and pins, and an on- line Hall of Fame gallery.
- Illuminating the role of the Job Creator. By providing an extensive file of articles, research and documentation, the empirical case for the vital role of the Job Creator will be publicized. A regular stream of press releases and blogs will be provided to encourage both local and national discussion of this essential American economic hero.
- Equipping Job Creators with Needed Resources. As the positioning of the Institute’s role as a focal point for the Job Creator expands, we will provide an ever-growing and powerful point of coordination for those tools, resources and organizations that equip and empower the Job Creator to more effectively perform their role in an ever more challenging economic environment.
Deborah Anderson, another of the founders, adds, “We spent a great deal of time discussing the issues of what has brought about the economic situation today relative to jobs. We listened to the pundits and read the articles. As Job Creators ourselves, we recognize that a common thread in all the press and debate is the discussion of jobs as if they just appear and disappear. The reality is that good jobs are created by good people working hard to build profitable businesses in the greatest economic system the world has ever known.”
She added, “But it is not just the system – it is the Job Creators themselves who are integral to making that system work. Just as we celebrate having the world’s greatest fighting force of men and women serving to protect our way of life, it is time the Job Creator get receives the recognition and encouragement they deserve. They are the “secret” weapon” in this fight that we must focus on, celebrate, and equip.”
As a grass roots effort, JCI will seek to aggressively build its network of supporters and resources over the coming weeks and months to achieve the stated goals of the organization. An early and significant effort will be working with Congress to create a national “Job Creators Day” to increase public awareness and appreciation of the men and women who serve so tirelessly to create our nation’s jobs.
