Former GOP Rep. Ray LaHood bashes ‘do nothing’ Republicans in Congress

Former Republican Congressman Ray Lahood, currently Secretary of Transportation — and the only Republican in the Obama administration, bashed members of his party in an interview given to Eleanor Clift of The Daily Beast.

Lahood said that the freshmen class of “tea party” congressmen prioritizes defeating President Obama over creating jobs. “The crowd that was elected the last time not only came here to do nothing, they also came to put down the president,” he said.

“And the way to put him down is not to give him any kind of opportunity to be successful,” LaHood said. “Republicans made a decision right after the election — don’t give Obama any victories. The heck with putting people to work, because we can score points.”

LaHood was first elected to Congress in 1994 as a member of the most significant Republican wave preceding the 2010 election.

The class of ’94, Lahood said, “didn’t come here to do nothing. They came here to vote on things, to make change for the positive… That’s not the fact with this crowd.”

LaHood served as a congressman from 1995 to 2009. His congressional district is currently represented by Republican Rep. Aaron Schock.

OHMAGAWD HES A RINO! A ROMNEYCRAT! ITS NOT TRUE! ITS ALL OBAMAS FAULT!

I know, it's sick. I hate calling it right and getting screamed at as a paid poster for Obama and an operative of the Alinsky/ACORN super-secret-socialist government takeover agency.

But yea, one of their own just copped to it. Expect the flood of denials.
      • Robert 6 mths ago
Gloat now sucker..... I would make getting rid of NOBAMA a priority if I was elected as well. What's wrong with getting rid of an ignorant pres. who has spent 8 trillion on the economy and has NOTHING benificial to show for it. If only NOBLAMA had done nothing himself, we would be so much better off...!!!
      • Chasten 6 mths ago
Your last post was 7 trillion. Inflation is a #$%$p.s. most of those deficits were generated by Dubya if you actually research it.

Mitch McConnell said it best in 2009. They will do everything they can to make this President a one term President. Suddenly following are record filibusters and complete noncooperation on levels unprecedented in the history of this country.

Congressional polls have never been lower in this country. Obama's economy approval is suffering but it's like Republicans are blind. Their numbers are lower by more than double but somehow they believe "this election will be a referendum on Obama".

Come election day there are going to be some serious surprises. Maybe Obama wins, maybe not but at the rate Republicans are going, I'm positive less of them will be in control when the dust settles.
      • minderbinder 6 mths ago
Obama had the house and senate for two years and all he could do was give us Obamacare. Please. If you really think one of these parties has done the American public a favor, you are delusional.
      • Fr 6 mths ago
Mind With the inclusion of blue dog dems who are only congenital repug liars posing as democrats, and if you study the senate rules it only takes a single senator to block a bill in conference.

All your point proves is that democrats can agree to disagree and republicans are steadfastly united in an effort that qualifies as treason.

If your going to try to twist the truth, try bothering to study it before you lie again.

I voted for Republicans over the last 10 years and now I feel like a jerk. I'm serious. I should be considered a traitor to my country. Not only did we screw it up when we were in power, now we're screwing it up for those that are. What the hell happened???

I would like to know just how many hours congressmen and senators spend per week doing work for the people .I had to put in 50hrs per week AND OH I HAD TO MAKE A PROFIT ALSO We need to stop voteing for incumbents until they do the job right.
      • Harold 6 mths ago
Do Americans realize that 12 people , six from the house and six from the senate . These people are deciding our fate with cuts to total at least one and a half trillion to reduce the budget. So we have 100 senators and 435 congressman. So we have 523 people getting paid for not doing the job that they were elected for! So why are we paying these 535 other MAGGOTS TO SHIRK THERE DUTY!! I smell 535 RATS!!

Wake up America we ONLY HAVE TWELVE PEOPLE DOING THERE JOB!!!

Your talking term limits. The sooner the better. Also outlaw lobbyist, our country should not be for sale.
      • The Boss 6 mths ago
Vern, I agree we need to stop voting for Repub incumbents, with an exception or two, but most reps and senators work 60-70 hours a week, so whether you like the way they vote or not, they work hard.

      Here’s the opening paragraph from a NYT’s piece written 18 month's ago.

"Before the health care fight, before the economic stimulus package, before President Obama even took office, Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican minority leader, had a strategy for his party: use his extensive knowledge of Senate procedure to slow things down, take advantage of the difficulties Democrats would have in governing and deny Democrats any Republican support on big legislation."

Republicans understand only too well that any recovery in the economy between now and election day works against their ultimate goal – victory in 2012.

For all their bluster and rhetoric about job creation our number one focus”), Republicans would rather see the unemployment numbers exceed 10%.

And as a result of that mindset, no matter what the President says, it will be criticized and ripped to shreds by Congressional Republicans, by every candidate in the GOP primary, by every Tea Party official across the country, by Fox News and by every right-wing radio jock, newspaper and blog.

You don’t have to wait for the morning after President Obama’s job speech to read what Republican’s thought about it.

Those reviews were written three years ago – November 4, 2008 to be precise.

TIME TO VOTE OUT TEAPUBLICANS !!
      • Robert 6 mths ago
Sounds like a lot of #$%$ to me... Obama controled both houses of congress. Beside all that, this is normal for the Democracks as well.Three year old articles now just coming to light.... here goes that liberal media again....

Everybody with an ounce of brains has known this ever since they ran on a "job creation ticket" in 2008 and then announced their "gridlock" strategy of filibuster in the Senate and refusal to do anything in the House.

Is this news? Senator Mitch McConnell went in front of the TV cameras right after the election and said for the whole world to see that their main #1 priority is to make President Obama a one term President, in other words, to hell with the American people it all about our power and our corporate contributers. He cannot deny that that is the Republicans only goal he said it on TV for all to see, and Mr smiley and grin Cantor in the Congress is his main side kick, he is the same way. They should be put on trial for treason, putting personal gain and party ahead of the country.
    • GoldenSun  •  6 mths ago
Republicans changed the dynamics of politics perhaps forever when, for the first time in history, an entire political party chose as it's primary agenda, from day one of the Presidential election, to cause" the President to fail".

This, at the absolute worst time in America's founding since the great depression, when the United States had to deal with an enormous global economic crisis (resulting under 8 years of a horrible Republican administration, I might add) the Republican party and it's huge media base (Fox "News" etc) made it publicly known "we don't want the President (of the United States of America) to succeed".

With this as it's "mandate", the Republicans put forth a strategy to obstruct, criticize and demonize every legislative and political move the residing administration acted upon.

At the time when the American people needed our political system to work, and work together to save hardworking American's jobs, the Republicans took two years off to campaign and save THEIR jobs.

To the nation's misfortune this, in my opinion, un-American, un-Patriotic, extremely self-serving strategy, apparently worked, (as could be concluded by the recent 2010 elections).

Now, to the detriment of all Americans and our country, our system of government and electoral process remains extremely broken and faces the possibility that it will continue broken, if this type of political behavior becomes the norm and continues to be rewarded.

SAVE OUR COUNTRY! VOTE THEM OUT !!
    • THX-1138  •  6 mths ago
He has it very correct, that is the spoken agenda, Deny Obama anything and everything even if the GOP supported or even created it simply because it came from the White house. That is very Bad politics, and bad business. To place their own personal agendas above the stability of the entire nation shows a complete lack of understanding or qualifications to hold such a position. There is no credible defense of that type of behavior.

In God We Trust. In Congress We Don't. They even waste time trying to look like they're NOT wasting time. Shameful.
    • Dion  •  Conroe, United States  •  6 mths ago
I hope the voters remember that the GOP were perfectly happy to watch the country tank out simply to spite the Obama administration. They have done nothing to aid in the recovery of the country and have critized and fought against any and all attempts by the President to do so.Its time that the President starts issuing some executive orders and doing what the GOP refuses to be instrumental in doing.
    • FaustianBargain  •  Boston, United States  •  6 mths ago
He's right. They openly announced that their main priority is to make Obama a one term president no matter the cost. The problem is that the cost of doing nothing is paid, not by them, but by the American people.
    • GoldenSun  •  6 mths ago
This stagnant economy is the result of mistaken Republican policies, fanatical ideological beliefs and 3 years of GOP/Tea Party obstructionism.

Their pledges to Grover Norquist, their constant pandering to corporations and rich special interests that fund their elections and indeed, even WRITE their legislation.

The greatest detriment to the economic recovery is the GOP/Tea Party, whose blind hatred and political 'jihad' against this President of the United States, are causing prolonged suffering and sacrifice to the American people and the destruction of a Nation.

Seriously, fellow citizens, do not give these people further say in out politics!
    • john  •  6 mths ago
The stated #1 priority of the G.O.P is to make Obama a one term President and if that means keeping people unemployed and possible causing a little collateral damage in the process so be it their mantra is the ends justify the means this is a common view among all psychopaths.
    • Purple Party  •  6 mths ago
A Republican that tells it like it is. Obama hasn't had a chance to sign or veto any legislation because none id being sent to them. The only thing I have seen from the freshman class of the Republican party is beat Obama and to hell with everything else. Oh yea and don't tax the ultra wealthy. That would be bad? If they would propose some real legislation it might help.
    • Polo  •  6 mths ago
Oh oh, I think the GOP and Fox will label Mr. LaHood a traitor to his country and that he is a a socialist liberal commie. You know the usual for someone who disagrees with them. But laHood is just telling the truth. Someone on this Forum called Thomas put it perfectly.
