Former POW Jessica Lynch finishing teaching degree

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Jessica Lynch was just 19 when the world first saw her — a broken, blond soldier caught on combat video in Iraq, her face wearing something between a grimace and a grin.

The Army supply clerk was being carried on a stretcher after nine days as a prisoner of war. She had been captured along with five others after the 507th Maintenance Company took a wrong turn and came under attack in Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003. Eleven of her fellow soldiers died.

Lynch had joined the Army at 18 to earn money for college and become a school teacher. This Friday, at 28, she completes that mission.

She'll spend Thursday finishing her training as a student teacher at the same elementary school she attended in sparsely populated Wirt County. Then, on badly damaged legs and a right foot that still pains her, she'll walk across a stage Friday evening and get her education degree from West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

"It's tough to walk, but I look at it as, 'At least I'm walking,'" she says. "At least I have my legs. They may not work. I have no feeling in the left one. But it's attached, at least. ... At least I'm alive."

Nearly 4,500 Americans died and some 32,000 were wounded during the war in Iraq, winding down this month as the last American troops withdraw. The first woman lost was Lynch's friend and fellow soldier, 23-year-old Army Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa of Arizona, killed in the convoy attack.

"Knowing she died right beside me and that could fairly well have been me brings a whole new perspective," Lynch said. "You're just thankful for what you've been given, even if it's not what you wanted."

Today, Lynch and longtime boyfriend Wes Robinson are parents to 5-year-old Dakota, whose name honors her fallen American Indian friend. Marriage, she says, is in the plan, but there's no rush. What matters is the comfort she finds in her family. They are there when she's overcome by stress or shaken by the nightmares that still sometimes come.

"By looking at me through a picture, you'd never know anything is wrong," she said. "I fake it. But my family, my friends ... they know when I'm really in pain."

When she was rescued, the U.S. government used footage of Lynch to spin a tale that exaggerated the truth. To make her seem more heroic and rally public support for the war, the military claimed she'd gone down firing — when, in fact, her rifle had jammed. She wrote a book, "I Am A Soldier, Too," with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Rick Bragg, and has repeatedly worked to set the record straight.

"The bottom line is the American people are capable of determining their own ideals of heroes," she told Congress in 2007, "and they don't need to be told elaborate lies."

And the lies cost her. For a long time, she got hate mail. Some said she'd done nothing to deserve the attention or the title of hero. She once told Glamour magazine she felt like "the most hated person in America."

Every now and then, after a high-profile appearance, a hateful missive still arrives.

"They say things like, 'Who do you think you are? That was so eight years ago,'" Lynch said. "I just don't respond. It just doesn't bother me anymore. It used to, because I couldn't understand why people were hating me. I was just a soldier like the 100,000 others over there."

Literally and figuratively, she said, she now has a stronger backbone. "I just let things roll off."

Lynch said she'll take a semester off to travel and spend time with Dakota before the child starts school. Lynch hopes to start work soon on a master's degree in communications.

She'll also continue her speaking engagements with children and with veterans' groups. At those events, without fail, the most common question is whether she was shot.

"I can't answer because I don't even know myself," she says. "There's never been actual proof."

The crash of her Humvee is believed to have caused her injuries, which also included spinal fractures, nerve damage and a shattered right arm.

Sometimes Lynch is paid for her appearances. Often, she asks the audience to donate to Jessi's Pals, a venture she launched to provide blankets and stuffed animals to patients at WVU Children's Hospital.

Awkward questions aside, she thrives on the interaction of those three to five lectures a month. Four years ago, Lynch said she wanted to bow out of the spotlight and have a normal life. But now, attention is normal.

She is often recognized. Sometimes she's caught with a mouthful of food as people speak to her and try to touch her. She is no longer annoyed. She embraces it. She says hello and introduces herself to people who know her face but can't quite place it.

"Honestly, it does surprise me that so many people still are familiar with the story. I sometimes get taken aback when I hear people talking about it because it's like reading it in a book," Lynch said. "I forget, 'That's me.'"

If her fame has one benefit, it's the reminder that people are still thinking about U.S. troops, at home and overseas.

"And that's good," Lynch said, "because they still need our prayers just like they did nine or 10 years ago."

you know! nobody knows really what happend, wether lori fought back, or wether jessica could even use her weapon, before or after the humvee crash, i drove right past the wreckage, blood stains on the seats, doors wide open, bullet holes riddled the front windshield, i saw in white on the back window a sticker that said sgt james riley. there was fire, and smoke billowing from the convoy, something ill never forget, i was a cpl at the time with FOX 2/8, at one time jessica lych was about a 100 yards away from us, we didnt know it at the time. they moved her during the night to another location, we found her flack jacket n helmet insde the next day. i can say aside from the addrenaline rush of being in a fire fight war is hell. if i said i wasnt scared id be lying!!!

HI. Steve- Thank you for your service to our Country!

ditto that Blynne - Steve, you're all heroic. The fact that Jessica got any hate mail at all was just ridiculous. As someone who did not, I say that all who serve our country should he honored and appreciated.

Let us thank ALL veterans for their service. Also, who can say what we would do if put into the same situation she was in. Never judge a man until you walk a mile in his shoes!

Ours is a VOLUNTARY MILITARY. In my book that makes any service personnel injured on the job a hero! Those who sit at home, particularly the welfare types, should bless each and every soldier. Without them we would have to go back to the draft. If run impartially everyone could find themselves IN HARMS WAY.

Though all of the attention may be undue do to the PR bus run by the government...How many of you can relate to having your humvee crash, during a surprise ambush in a strange country, receiving serious injuries and having your weapon jam all in a less than 5 minute time frame while under fire...Not to mention your battle buddy expires right next to you? I didn't think so. As far as BCT is concerned, the don't be Jessica Lynch thing is to encourage you to pass your land navigation course instead of relying on GPS that often time fails not that she was a terrible soldier. She was in supply for goodness sakes, not 11B. The fact she served should be respected in of itself.

Ask veterans of Nam and special forces what it's like to wake up every day, depending on your team to do their job just as you should; to keep one another alive. Ask the famiies of those killed while Jessica was hiding under the vehicle. Soldiers don't let other's die if there's one thing, they can do. I've been there. Weapon clearing doesn't take that long. What about the weapons of the fallen? They gave their lives for her, she betrayed them. Can you relate to that?
      • Flabbergasted 5 mths ago
Ivory, you are grasping at straws.. Comparing a supply clerk on convoy duty to a special forces team...Seriously? You've been there? Had a severe spinal chord injury and multiple fractures, managed to bound over to the weapon of a fallen comrade, clear the jam and eliminate all of the enemy? I think you have watched one to many Rambo's or play too much Medal of Honor. Besides, the Special Forces that I know don't brag, usually don't even re hash things and are some of the most humble folk I have met. You look to get into a #$%$ match and brag, "I've been there." I doubt your credentials but thanks for playing.

Don't pay attention to the people pretending to be soldiers. they are not soldiers. a real soldier would never make such immature comments about a fellow soldier. it is unbecoming conduct. they are merely trolls.
      • mark 5 mths ago
i agree i am a SGM in the reserve, i have have a set of twins that are serving, one a marine the other a soldier, my marine is in Afghanistan as i type, these people have the nerve to question jessica, at least she signed up and she was in a war zone, as for other service memebrs critizing here, read the seven straights of a soldier, loyalty, duty, respect selfless-service, honor integrity, and last but not least personal courage. this has to be hurtful to her becuase it takes courage and sacrifice to service this great nation.
    • bob  •  Chicago, United States  •  5 mths ago
all these ugly comments is what is wrong with America now... NO PRIDE for our troops. Shame.. in seconds in bad conditions you have no time to react...and you find yourself in Jessica's situation ..and through her daily pain and suffering she still serves her fellow human being by teaching others .... what can you low life on here say that you have given? I hurt everyday from Agent Orange that Lady Bird Johnson sprayed all over us ...this girl has more back bone then most of us .... Be PROUD ....
    • julio  •  5 mths ago
Shoshana Johnson received bullet wounds to both her ankles but didn't get the media attention in part because she wasn't a cute little blue-eyed blond-haired girl. She did get some recognition years later at the New Year's event at Time's Square where she pushed the button to drop the ball. Most didn't see it unless they were there or had a satellite feed because the TV network was doing more Pepsi commercials while she was being honored.

Regardless of the details, she went over there and fought for all of the people making negative comments here. What have you done?

I would have more respect for a military cook, who never leaves the safety of the base kitchen, never saw ANY action overseas and is scared of his own shadow... then someone who wasn't brave enough to go over there at all in the 1st place and has the nerve to talk crap about a soldier who was permenantly injured protecting YOU.

        Amen! Well said.
      • MARIO 5 mths ago
I am a military cook and spent plenty of time outside the wire because of contractors, we kicked down doors with the rest of them. Jessica will always be a joke to us real soldiers.
      • Kevin 5 mths ago
@Mario, read it again, I said "WHO NEVER LEAVES THE SAFETY OF THE BASE KITCHEN"....I did not say "kicking in doors with the rest of them"...
    • Pat  •  Sunnyvale, United States  •  5 mths ago
She told the truth ... when all around her were spinning lies. That makes her an AUTHENTIC hero.
    • BRIAN  •  5 mths ago
I personally think they ARE ALL heroes. I don't care if a serviceman or woman has never left American soil. Just signing up for the POSSIBILITY of facing combat is heroic enough. I wish the US government took better care of our vets. Why is it that the VA hospitals have the poorest reputation, when they really should be the best hospitals and care in the country. I would vote for any president who stated they would charge an additional one-percent income tax dedicated SOLELY for the aftercare of our vets. (I would also vote for a president who ditched the #$%$ daylight saving time practice). Anyway, Jessica, if you are reading this, I salute you, no matter what. I'm sorry for your pain, and I'm sorry about the negative comments that you received, but you are what makes America America.

A lot of criticism of her... But not enough crap talking about the government and military that actually USED this event to somehow justify what was going on...

WOW!!! REALLY PEOPLE?!?! To the ones that are talking SMACK about a then 19 year old young lady, that decideds to go into a branch of the UNITED STATES MILITARY to gain an education while fighting for OUR COUNTRY'S FREEDOM: HERO- A warrior-chieftain of special strength, courage, or ability. This girl left her family to do what she felt was right and in the process things went terribly wrong. It doesnt matter is she didnt kill people or drag her fellow soilders to safety. She was trained to what she had to do to survive. How many of you have had someone killed RIGHT BESIDE OF YOU? There are many soliders that come home and never face a day of blood shed, gun fire, or death, but they are STILL VETERANS! YES, she is concidered a POW. She may not have had it as bad as some other American soliders, past, present and fallen, but she served her time and she has come clean and told everything how it was. It wasnt her that hyped up the story, it was THE MEDIA! Just be thankful that there are people that DO fight for our COUNRTY and for our FREEDOM, because without them we wouldn't be sitting here reading stories about them on a computer! Now, HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS!
    • unan  •  Stevens Point, United States  •  5 mths ago
wow The #$%$ people feel ok with sayin while they are sitting behind a computer desk you judge her but could you really say that you would have done different could no you couldnt not unless you have been in the same spot what kills me is she isnt runing around saying shes a hero and yet people act like shes out there rubbing it your face that she got a title she didnt earn and by the way just joining has honor in it an honor most of you are to coward to earn so just stop and please do all the rest of us a favor and shut up cause your annoying with all the complaining that your doing

The only way to become a teacher is to go to school for it. The only way to become a accountant is to go to school for it. The only way to become a patriot is to go to school for it, the school of patriots is service to country. She did and she does deserve the respect for that. In my day service was an obligation prerequisite for calling yourself a citizen which is more than I can say for many of the posters on this site.

wow She joins the army and is sent to Iraq. She is a passenger in a Hummer that takes a wrong turn and crashes. She has her legs crushed and arm messed up and gets shot at. She has her friends all shot up around her then gets dragged into a building and smacked around for over a week. Then she is rescued and brough home so bunch of bone heads can tell her what an "A" hole coward she is. Yeah, thats a fine welcome home she got.

I can't believe some of the comments some of these idiots are posting! She was barely out of high school and thrown into a war. I'd like to see some of you in her shoes and see what you would have done. Most of you being cruel would have more then likely crapped in your pants!!!
