Former San Francisco cop pleads not guilty

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A former San Francisco police officer charged with stealing from suspects has pleaded not guilty.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that 45-year-old Reynaldo Vargas entered the plea on Thursday and was released on $50,000 bond.

A federal grand jury has indicted Vargas and two other officers on charges involving the theft of money, electronic devices and gift cards from suspects, and drugs that were seized as part of investigations.

Another indictment announced Thursday alleges civil rights violations by three other San Francisco officers.

Five officers are expected to appear in court on Friday.
