Former SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro nominated as a General Electric board member

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) -- Former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro has been nominated as a General Electric director.

Schapiro will be up for election at the company's annual shareholders meeting on April 24.

Schapiro was chairman of the SEC from January 2009 through December. Before that, she served as CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority from 2007 through 2008.

Shares of General Electric Co., based in Fairfield, Conn., fell 8 cents to $23.69 in Monday morning trading.
