Fox Says "Please, No More Mulaney"

Look, no one's saying "canceled." Buuuuuuuuut everyone's thinking it. Fox has decided it doesn't need any more of Mulaney, and I certainly won't argue with it. The network has halted production of the multi-camera sitcom following the completion of its thirteenth episode, says Deadline.

Mulaney initially received a six-episode, straight-to-series order last fall; in May, Fox added another 10 episodes, raising the show's Season 1 tally to 16 (which is a totally weird number). So far, only two of those episodes have aired, but in the wake of negative reviews and low ratings—the series premiere notched a 1.0 rating with the 18-to-49 crowd; Episode 2 actually bested it with a 1.1—the network has trimmed Mulaney's episode order from 16 episode to 13. Although it must be noted that Fox didn't necessarily "trim" so much as it said, "Let's just stop it right there," as Mulaney just finished filming Episode 13. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will continue to air in its current Sunday-night timeslot in an attempt to grow its audience. I'd guess that there's a good chance that all 13 of the series' completed episodes will air, but zero chance that it'll return for a second season.

So what's the deal? Was Mulaney hampered by too-good talent being stuck in a weird environment? Was it doomed by studio notes? Was it weighed down by terrible scheduling on a night full of cartoons? Or was it just a lame show? TELL ME!
