Fox Sets Premiere Dates for American Idol, New Hip-Hop Drama Empire

Grab a Sharpie and your 2015 "puppies and ostriches who are best friends" calendar, because Fox has announced premiere dates for both the 14th season of American Idol and its new music-industry drama Empire.

The search for America's next singing superstar (that doesn't take place on The Voice) will kick off on Wednesday, January 7 at 8pm. That's when returning judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr. will join host Ryan Seacrest for the audition-centric first hour of a two-night, three-hour Idol premiere event.

Following Idol at 9pm on January 7 will be the series premiere of Empire. Set in the world of hip-hop and centering on a family dynasty, the series comes from Lee Daniels (The Butler, Precious) and features music by Timbaland. Terrence Howard and Person of Interest alum Taraji P. Henson star.

The next night, on Thursday, January 8, Idol will conclude its two-night debut with two more hours of auditions starting at 8pm. In its first week, the long-running reality singing competition will feature contestants from Kansas City, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco.
